Career question
« on: September 22, 2015, 10:39:01 PM »
So to start, I am a registered nurse. I am currently in a position in which I have a 30 minute commute and I am paid hourly about 28$/hr. I work roughly 84 hours/2 weeks, I work 7 12 hours shifts every two weeks. I have been interviewing at other facilities and got 2 offers today, I already made a decision but I guess I am looking to have people's opinions on what I should of done.

Job offer 1, 12 hour shifts,  half hour commute, about 31$/hr, roughly 36 hours per week. This job is at a hospital, having hospital experience would give me the ability to move around to other hospitals in the future, also being in a small hospital I would have the opportunity to move around and experience many specialties. I was told in the interview depending on how full the facility is, I may be called off an average of once/month. Training is supposed to last 2-4 weeks.

Job offer 2- 8-10 hour shifts, 40 hours per week, 15 minute commute, pays about 33.50/hr, and it is a state job. This job is in a jail, I would get wide array of experience dealing with whatever comes in. Patients that are too sick for me to care for will be sent to the hospital. I am being paid more and get state benefits, however I will not have hospital experience. There is also a stigma around corrections nursing and I have been told it is hard to get into a hospital after. I was told training has been up to 6 months in the past.

So I want to know what the mustachians would choose and why. I am working on my bachelors online. If there are any additional questions please feel free to ask. Thanks.

Q2- I have been with my current employer for a month. I don't mind the job but I looked elsewhere because of the compensation. I am still in training and am scheduled to train until the end of the month. My plan is to call tomorrow and inform my manager I have another offer I am going to take and ask her how she would like me to proceed. If I am scheduled to train, I doubt they will want to pay me to train for a job I will not work. Am I handling this correctly? I know I am likely burning a bridge.

Job #1 because I couldn't work in a jail.

Will you owe your current job for the training?

Job #1 definitely.

Being a nurse at a jail is draining work!

Lol, well I went with #2, maybe it'll be a mistake. The biggest factor for me was that the hospital is small and known for paying new grads more then their experienced nurses. I went and spoke with my boss today, I feel bad but it had to be done. I am excited to start!
