Best MMM link to send to potential new Mustachian?
« on: September 22, 2013, 07:56:27 PM »
Oh wow. I should be posting in the celebrations thread, but I'm too eager to ask you guys... So, I was talking to my partner and the subject of "I wish I could retire" came up, and I seized the moment to talk to her about MMM. She knows I've been reading a lot on here lately and I've mentioned a few things. I explained sort of what it's about without going into a whole lot of detail, and asked her if she'd be willing to open-mindedly read some MMM, and she said a pretty emphatic YES.

So... Help me out here, guys, I woudl like to get her totally on board. What's the BEST MMM blog link to send her to get her hooked without sending her out the door screaming? I want her to know why MMM does this, that he does this for the "right" reasons, that there is sacrifice involved but that it ultimately actually brings way more happiness and fulfillment, and that one does not need to be bored after early retirement, just that one has a choice of how to spend that time.

If it helps, here's a little about her: 35 yo female, we're getting married soon, just bought a house, steady income, somewhat frugal in her ways already, lots of student loans, and just bought a new car, but no credit card debt (had a ton after being unemployed for a while, but diligently paid it off about a year ago).

The best MMM link is whatever applies to her situation the most. She has debt? That's a decent place. Does she hate working? Shockingly simple math would be good.

I think this recent one would be a good starter post:

The Simple Math Behind Early Retirement (or something like that...) is my favorite, but I'm a numbers guy.

here's a sticky in Welcome and General Discussion with a "top ten" list for new folks.

I'm kinda new myself to this blog and forum, so while I have caught up on some reading, I don't know all of MMM's greatest posts yet. Yes, something about paying off your loans FAST, biking to work, saving money, not buying non-essentials, etc.

She doesn't totally hate working, and mentioned she'd be bored if she retired, to which I replied that you don't have to sit there and do nothing if you retire early. So she said she'd love to just volunteer a couple of days a week and help homeless people with her skills but not have her regular job.

Thanks, durangostash94. That was one I thought might be neat to include too. Should I send a short selection of 3 or 4 links?

Show her the little MMM video. Seeing the MMM family and their nice house and life made the whole enterprise more appealing and less anxiety-inducing to my S.O.

She might enjoy a woman's view on it with Mrs. MMM's take on frugality, being that she never herself envisioned this life originally.
