If I could get by without a car for forever, I would, but with a third child on the way, I think it's time we bite the bullet.
I've checked through the "Three Across" thread at car-seat.org, and it looks like you can put three car seats across the back of many cars, some more easily than others. In a perfect world, I could fit three kids across the back of a Honda Fit or Scion xA, and it would be easy to get them in and out, and they would never bother each other.
In reality, it looks like we might want something bigger than a sub-compact. I've been thinking about the Toyota Matrix/Pontiac Vibe, but I've also been looking at the Mazda 5 and Kia Rondo, about $11K used. It would be nice to have the low price and high mpg of a more compact car, but at least I wouldn't be in minivan territory. I could buy with cash, or I could get 2.5% financing, which beats our highest student loan rate, but I might not want the extra complication.
Should I consider doing three across, or do you think it would be too hard?
