Best car to tow a small tent trailer?
« on: February 24, 2017, 10:08:17 AM »
DH and I are looking to replace our 2000 Subaru Brighton and 2003 Echo with one vehicle that would be capable of towing a small tent trailer.  We want to buy something around 2013/2014/2015 so still relatively new.

The big question is whether the vehicle could tow a small tent trailer, so at least 2000lbs but a bit more capacity would be good.

DH is seduced by the BMW SX1, which one European review calls "a SUV for the lower middle class".  Hahaha.  But I'm not comfortable with the high cost of BMW maintenance and parts.  Ford Escapes seem popular but we wonder about the quality.  Subaru Foresters have become bloated!

We rarely drive in town so are not too concerned about ultra cheap gas mileage.

Suggestions?  Recommendations?

IIRC, Subaru went to a CVT in 2014, and there were issues with people towing with them early on. Something to look into on those specifically.
For a time, we had a 2011 CR-V that towed our 1100 lb tent trailer beautifully.

If you buy a Ford, do not buy an automatic. It's their weak point, and has been since the days of the Pinto.

Thanks!  The CR-V is appealing but like the Forester, is now a much bigger vehicle.  The sweet spot seems to have been about 5 years ago.  Agree re Fords!  Just not confident in them.
