Basic Checking Account Bank Recommendations?
« on: August 31, 2018, 07:26:58 AM »
I'm in the USA, and I've been using Bank of America for the last 10 years, but for a host of reasons (the final straw being the recent news that they're freezing bank accounts for "suspected immigrants") I do not want to do business with them anymore.

I use my account primarily for checking which is linked to my debit card.  I use this to put my bills on autopay, get my wages direct deposited, and pay for everything else.  I basically want the same thing, but at an institution with less questionable business practices.  I know credit unions are often mentioned, but I don't know how they work or how to find one that I qualify for.

What would you recommend?

Re finding a bank, the best way I know is to think of who has branches around me. Then I research their products. In your case, you'll add in the corporate actions when you're researching.

Find a credit union?

I like Alliant - they are large.

I'm guessing that googling "credit unions near me" will get you started?

We have a credit union account and an account at a regional bank.

I opened a Chase account with a $250 new-customer promo after my credit union started charging me a mandatory $3/mo membership fee.  I like Chase well enough.
