Banking with Wellsfargo in Minnesota?
« on: February 14, 2015, 12:35:46 PM »
Moving to Minnesota next month and our current bank doesn't operate there. Anyone have experience (good or bad) with Wellsfargo there? I'm thinking of moving our accounts, but don't know much about the banks there. We'd be living in Minneapolis, bank almost entirely online except for the occasional deposit/withdrawal. Would love any advice.

We used them and were happy. We've always gotten the best mortgages from them, too.

And I boycott TCF as they are super pushy and aggressive so I avoided them on principle.

Is there any reason you prefer a brick-and-mortar bank to an online one? I find I go into a brick-and-mortar branch approximately never these days, though when I did have a Wells Fargo account I bought a car by going to a branch, having the money taken out onto the counter, then immediately redeposited into the seller's account. But there are plenty of ways to transfer big piles of funds these days.

ehgee,

Maybe the question is better stated why not? We don't use a brick and mortar bank often, but in the case that I did, my guess is having one nearby would be more advantageous than any additional benefits from using an all online bank. Is there something I'm missing?

Poor rates combined with annoying fees if you don't carefully ensure you maintain a minimum balance. That was my issue, at least.

OMG, please don't. I was with WF for years and found their service to be horrible. Plus, I opted for a mortgage with them because they had the best rate if you considered their offer of a 0.25% reduction in exchange for setting up auto-pay from a WF checking account. I got the better rate for exactly one month before they sold the mortgage to US Bank (which had even worse customer service).

Now, I have Capital One 360 combined with free checking with TCF for my occasional brick-and-mortar bank needs. I don't really have anything positive or negative to say about TCF. I've heard good things about Associated Bank, just not enough to make a change to an account I rarely use.

I've had a Wells Fargo account from Minnesota since they were called Norwest Bank. They're fine as far as huge banks go. As long as you can get an account with no fees, I don't have much reason to recommend against them. You'll get a slightly higher interest rate at an online bank, but you shouldn't be keeping enough in a savings account for that to make a huge difference anyway.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
