Title: Are used bicycles at LBS "co-op" negotiable?
Post by: The 585 on April 21, 2017, 07:49:57 AM
I'm in the market for an older model used road bike, and I saw that my local bike shop, a bicycle "cooperative", has several for sale. Is it possible to negotiate on the listed price for bikes there? I ask because from my understanding, bicycle co-ops run non-profit and by donations. I wouldn't want to try to haggle if it could be considered offensive at this type of shop. Thanks!

Never hurts to ask.

At my local co-op, the bikes are absolutely negotiable if you are needy.  They are not negotiable if you can afford full price.

In general in any local co-op there is absolutely chance of getting negotiation. It is possible when you are very much needy person. Otherwise they will not give you chance to negotiate if you can afford it.

If it's a purely for-profit store, go ahead.

If it's a charitable organisation where the profits are used to support providing bikes for the less fortunate (and staffed by volunteers), well, if you can afford full price, haggling may just cross that thin line between frugal and cheap.

Just my two cents. :)
