Appliance delivery damage - should we ask for reimbursement?
« on: March 03, 2023, 05:13:04 PM »
Costco delivered a washer and dryer today (both our old ones were malfunctioning).  When they turned off the water (or tried to disconnect the hoses, it's unclear), the CPVC pipe broke just below one of the valves, water running mostly into the crawl space.  We immediately shut off the water to the house, they left the appliances askew and fled.  Well, one said "bye" but they couldn't run any tests, and besides, I was busy calling plumbers...

Friday afternoon, of course, so we had to pay extra for after hours service or live without water for the weekend.  $463.85 later, it's fixed (he replaced both valves).  Should we just suck it up, or should I take this up with Costco for at least a partial refund?

Did you pick the delivery team, or did Costco?  If them, absolutely you should push for it.

My neighbor had a new fridge from best buy.  The installers looked at the valve for his water, and said he needed a new one.  He said OK, somthey brought someone out.  He said, no it's fine, so he connected it.  Guess what broke?

No crawlspace or basements here.  Water got over 1/2 the house, including wood floors.  Cost $$,$$$

Best Buy sprang for it--their people made the mistake.

I would definitely try. I bet they try to get out of it by claiming they are only responsible for install, not un-installing the old one.
Do you have any paperwork with their install policy? Start there, then call.

The delivery is arranged by Costco (they bought Innovel in 2020, which is who does the deliveries).  The purchase includes delivery, install, and haul away of the old.

I'll see if they contact me next week.  They know their guy broke the valve because they called to see if we still wanted the washer while I was mopping the floor.

I hope they pay for it!

When we had our washer and dryer installed recently by a Costco delivery team, we were not happy with the process. They didn’t bring a cord/plug for our dryer. So they called someone else to come out, and he brought the wrong plug. Instead of offering to get the correct one and come back out… he explained to my husband how we could just do it ourselves. So we went to the hardware store, bought the correct plug, and my husband installed it. I called Costco customer service, and they refunded us the amount I told them I spent on the plug.

I contacted them Monday, got an email with info request on Wednesday, and sent it off with a copy of the bill.  I did mention that the plumber replaced both valves, and asked for reimbursement for the after hours fee and half the repair cost.

Costco FTW.  While I had originally asked for just the after hours and half the repair cost, I was notified today that we're getting reimbursed for the plumber's charge in full.

Since I didn't request anything for fixing the wall that the plumber had to cut, or any repainting (it's behind the washer anyway) I'm perfectly okay with the amount.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
