Anyone else raise chickens?
« on: November 25, 2014, 01:22:48 PM »
My wife and I started raising chickens (5) in our backyard this year for eggs.  So far its been a great experience.  We get 4 - 5 eggs a day and it costs less than $15 a month for feed.   The chickens also eat a lot of our table scraps.

Having no livestock experience, I was nervous about doing this at first but it has been great.  It is not much of a time commitment and the rewards are great.

Anyone else do this?

Our friends have three chickens. They're pretty delightful.

I wouldn't mind getting some myself, but they tie you down to the house. We enjoy traveling. Finding a neighbor who is willing to feed them for weeks during winter break or summer vacation would be a real problem.

All you really need is someone to collect the eggs while you are gone.  You can easily leave them with enough food and water for a 1 - 2 week absence.  My neighbors are happy to take on this responsibility because they get the eggs.
