Any gotchas for an American to fly to England from Canada?
« on: February 11, 2015, 05:20:39 PM »
We live close to the Candian border, and looking for prices it is cheaper for us to drive to Canada and fly to England from Canada versus flying from America.

Are there any gotchas to this plan?

Yep. You'll have your passports. No problem. My sister just went to Cuba from Canada, as she's American and can't go direct.

Well, you may be greeted by border guards in French as well as English, which is a great way to get in the "Yay I'm off to Europe!" spirit. That's about it. Have fun!

When I flew out of Bellingham, WA one time, half the cars I saw in the parking lot were people from BC driving across the border for a cheaper flight. It works both ways. :-)

We flew into Vancouver from China several years ago, & it was considered our port of entry into the U.S. Had to clear customs there & they misplaced a bag, which they even had a photograph of. By the time the bag was returned to customs for clearance, we were released to wait in a huge line with a just arrived cruise ship for our flight to DFW.

We now try to do all trips carry-on only.

Occasionally you can do even better by flying from the US to Europe via Canada on a Canadian airline (which in practice means Air Canada). They need to undercut US carriers with direct flights.
