Ameriplan discount dental
« on: October 17, 2019, 02:09:04 PM »
I typed "Ameriplan" into the search engine for the MMM forum and got zero results. Has anyone used this discount plan for dental coverage? Would you recommend it? Any advice? Ameriplan has a monthly premium of $24.95 and has a fixed discount price for all dental services. A comprehensive exam with full-mouth x-ray is about $125 compared to about $350 for full price.

My husband's employer offers a basic dental plan for our family which is $22 a pay period ($576 in yearly premiums). Last night we calculated how much our plan actually paid for our care this calendar year and it was about $450. Doesn't seem like we're getting much value. We're exploring other options before the enrollment window closes. I appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

In the last year how much did you pay out of pocket [ not counting the 576$ premiums] toward dental visits ?  Maybe you just didn't visit the dentist much ? It's only october, if you scheduled a couple of cleanings by end of year you'd probably be at  $450 [already] plus 126 [ cleanings] value. Did you have any complicated work done - things that would cost a lot of $$ - multiple visits for same related issue, etc ?

Is the Ameriplan accepted by as many dentists / orthodontists as the work plan, and/or by your current dentist ?

I'm always wary of anything that calls itself Ameri-whatever. A little too much assumed / inferred  patriotism for my tastes. Ameri-beef, Ameri-surance, Ameri-lawyers, Ameri-care, Ameri-vegies .

Thanks for giving me a lot to think about. You brought up some good points. Both DH and I had two cleanings and a filling each. DS has had one cleaning so far and will have another in November. Plus he needs some treatment done which we will try to schedule before EOY. You're right that by December we will probably have gotten our money's worth from the insurance plan. Next year DD will start seeing the dentist too which should add additional benefit.

Going forward we've decided we'll stick with the employer sponsored dental plan but make a much more concerted effort to use it to its maximum benefit. For the last couple years we've enrolled in the plan because that's what responsible people do, but then didn't use it much because we've been so overwhelmed with work, a toddler and a newborn. Our self care has really taken a hit. Realizing now that was a terrible waste of money.

Thanks! That's the other one we were researching.
