Airvoice Wireless internet issue
« on: September 19, 2013, 09:54:13 PM »
I have an unlocked AT&T iPhone 4 that I am using with Airvoice. I have the $10 monthly plan that allows me to use the internet for a fee, but I cannot go online - even after I enable cellular data and enable 3G. I am able to receive videos, pictures and messages on the iMessage. I've been trying to figure out my connection issue, and it seems it's because I need to change my APN (http://www.unlockit.co.nz/mobilesettings/settings.php?id=177), but my phone doesn't have an option to change it. My cellular settings are missing the function. Has anyone had the same issue?

did you talk to a person at av? they have to walk you thru some thing, iirc, for data to work.

Two links for you:

I've heard of issues with some unlocked AT&T iPhone 4 models even when unlocked not showing the network settings with an Airvoice SIM card installed. You've got a couple ways around that...

1) Stick in a T-Mobile based SIM card of some variety to ensure it's carrier unlocked, and also see if you can access the network settings so you can change it that way.

2) Use the iPhone Configuration Utility from that second link to push the settings manually from your desktop.

There's technically a third option that I'm sure someone might link and suggest (as it has in the past), but it requires offloading far more trust onto a blind process via a third party website than most users should be willing to do. It's really no harder to do through the Apple utility, and you gain a bit extra understanding about how to manage your device in the process.

My wife's unlocked iPhone 4 won't show the carrier settings if any flavor of "AT&T" sim card is inserted. "AT&T" in this case includes MVNO's on AT&T's network. Inserting a T-Mobile sim card (even one that's not active) has always worked great for me. The settings stick after removing the T-Mobile sim and inserting the one you want to use. T-Mobile frequently offers their sims for free or $.99 shipped, or see if you can borrow one from a friend.

Thanks for pointing out that it'll work even if the SIM card is inactive. Before Airvoice I had tmobile... which barely worked. Still have the SIM though. I'll try it out this weekend.

I'll try out the tmobile SIM first since it seems to work. BTW - thanks for recommending me airvoice a few months back. It's a great deal for $10 per month.

I was able to plug in the DNS settings on my own, but still had to talk to Airvoice to enable data and text messaging.  It was fairly painless.
