AARP membership...
« on: December 29, 2015, 06:55:15 PM »
Hi,
I just joined AARP.
Are there any benefits that you all routinely use?
I paid $63 for five year membership.
TIA

We had the membership for my husband.  We really didn't see what the benefit of having a membership did.  So many places we go to already have a AAA membership or a discount for seniors, so we cancelled it after a year.

The benefit we use the most is a discount at Denny's. We go there sometimes for breakfast after church.  Their prices are already pretty good and the discount just makes it better.   Sometimes we use the discount on hotels, but it is usually the same as the AAA price and we have that also.

I get a pretty good discount through their insurance agencies.. my rental trailer rental went down $40  and my house and car insurance was the cheapest thru them as well.

For $16 a year it was well worth it.

I have received great benefits with car rentals...especially the "second driver free" benefit for someone who is not a family member.  Have also received some good hotel discounts.

One of the local AARP chapters is very active....They called me to hire my band for one of their monthly dances.... I am 62, and an AARP member but I didn't know what to expect at their dance.

Maybe I was expecting some 85-year-olds in walkers sort of tapping their feet to the music.  Boy was I mistaken. The folks there were in their mid-50s on up to maybe late 70s and they danced to every freaking song we played.  They were even dancing to the warm-up songs we play to set the PA system.

They own a beautiful hall with a wonderful stage and a great dance floor. It's a non-smoking event and guests can bring their own drinks and food....

We are playing there for New Year's eve and the whole dance is sold out ahead of time.

Yep...those cats have a wonderful time....one our favorite places to play!

I'd have trouble supporting AARP due to what they lobby for.

But then again, I'm not of that age--maybe by the time I'm there, I'll have changed politically.
I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.
If you want to know more about me, this Business Insider profile tells the story pretty well.
I (rarely) blog at AdventuringAlong.com. Check out the Now page to see what I'm up to currently.

My grandmother gets large discounts on her medications through their prescription coverage. Other than that, she doesn't use it and in fact didn't realize she was getting the discounts until she cancelled her membership and her prescriptions skyrocketed. She promptly reinstated her membership.
