7 Habits. What is you Mission Statement?
« on: September 06, 2019, 08:26:49 AM »
I'm reading the 7 Habits and have been thinking a lot about my mission statement.

I would love to hear what others have as their guiding principles. What are the important priorities you think about when you need to make a decision, when life gets hard?

Mine is under construction and it's like this at the moment:

Be kind to myself. Be responsible. Be kind to others. Allow and foster learning and growing in others.

Be kind to myself
.I am enough, I am resourceful, I am worthy as I am.
 .self-sacrifice is not kindness
.say No at work, communicate in advance, ask for help and resources in order to maintain a light workload

Be responsible
.I have the capacity to act, the freedom to make choices
.save my energy so, when needed, I will have the calm, capability and energy to make decisions with kindness
.keep the body moving while respecting the need for rest

Be kind to others. Allow and foster learning and growing in others.
.Allow others to make their choices and deal with the consequences. Allow others to try, make mistakes and learn in order to enable their development

I am glad you ask this... I started mine about 4 years ago and never really fully completed it, maybe this will get me to sit down and spend more time on it! I do try to reread the book every year though to help 'align' myself.

My 'rough copy' version..

-Family always comes first (I then break down my desirable traits as a father, husband, son, and brother)
-I will always try to maintain a positive attitude
-I will pursue work that provides a positive impact on the world
-I will respect my body (what I consume and exercise)
-I will make decisions in life based on my values (not money)

I did have achieving financial independence as one (I made it YAY!) but that feels a little money centred as a principle when I read it now, especially when you read my last point on making decisions based on values not money. I definitely was a money centred person but I feel I am slowly drifting over to the value centred side.

I made mine a few years ago:

1. As a father, I will always prioritize my kid with the intent of setting her up for success in life.
2. As a husband, I will always support my wife in whatever she wants to pursue and help her grow and be happy.
3. As a son, it is my responsibility to take care of my parents as without their sacrifice I wouldn't be what I am today.
4. As part of the society, I will do everything in my control to make sure the community that I live in prospers. I would like to achieve this by helping the needy, addressing issues (not just raising them).
5. As a humanist, I will fight for equal human rights to the extent possible.
6. As a rationalist, I will reason and help people around me understand the reasoning by observing evidence. (This is especially close to me due to my background).

It is not perfect and I may have to fine tune, but I have been following #1,#2, #3 and #6 so far. The result is I am happier now. I am working on #4 and #5 but not sure how I want to approach those.
