Wow, that's.... wow. I guess P.T. Barnum was right, assuming there's anyone actually buying those.

And the "anti-pollution" face masks. Great for people who don't understand how actual filters, SCBA, etc. work.

Wow..just wow. But I guess there will be people who buy it.

I reminds me of the story of 'I am Rich' app. $1000 for app that did absolutely nothing ( sorry..it displayed text I am rich, I deserve it etc) and there were actually a few people who spent money to buy it.

Correction - these are "enviro-political artworks" - the epitome of guff! Doubt the political statement goes any further than showing up the spendypantsness of their owner!

How in the WORLD can they talk about enviro-political artwork when they are manufacturing glass and transporting it all over the UK to move air. It hurts my brain so much.

Meanwhile the guy in the shipping department pulls a jar out of a crate of 100, slaps a label on it promising that there is specific kinds of air inside and chuckles as he repacks it for the mail.

Most likely all these jars have the very same air in them - the air from the glass factory that manufactured the jars.

I went to the website, I imagine the person that wrote it had a fun time keeping a straight face while doing so.

Quote
AETHAER is individually packaged in premium quality, crystal-clear, heritage-style glass jars. The lid, also made of the same high quality material, contains an air tight rubber seal running around its entire circumference. The lid and seal assembly are hinged to the jar's neck by means of a metal fastening and clamp mechanism. The clamp hooks securely over the lid's metal fastening, and by means of a lever action, creates enough force to fasten the lid closed, maintaining an air tight seal, and preserving the precious AETHAER inside. The jar is locked shut to prevent accidental opening while being transported.

Ok. Did they just take credit for the rubber stopper circle on a jar?

Also, I notice there is no suggestion on how to open the jar and get the air to your face without mixing in all your terrible grimy local air. Or is this supposed to be a sand-in-the-jar type keepsake thing?

This part is amazing, from their About page - "Containing air that has been hand-farmed...".  Ahhh what?

Air farming.... Going to have look into that for post FIRE side income : )

How about a DIY version: glass jar for $5 and air from the backyard?

Super DIY: buy and eat fancy tomato sauce then clean & reuse the jar.

Even cheaper: I have a spare glass spaghetti jar I'd be happy to give you. Either you can supply your own air or I'll send you 1 quart of air from my house.

You can poke fun at the customers, but I'm always amused and a bit jealous of the people on the business end of this stuff. I remember coming up with similar business ideas after seeing the Artisanal Pencil Sharpening website, but I never did anything with it of course. When David Rees started the pencil-sharpening business, he was selling No.2 pencils for $20 apiece. It was cheap enough to give someone as a silly joke, and it earned him a lot of press and notoriety. I see that his price is now up to $500. I think it's brilliant. If there are people in the world who are eager to give away money so easily, there's no reason to feel bad about providing an outlet for their pent-up stupidity.

You guys gave me a brilliant idea for holiday gifts, even though we don't do the whole celebration and festivities. Just to amuse my kids, I'm going to take old pasta sauce or nut butter jars and fill them with backyard air. Use some sisal twine along with a mulch nugget and stickerize.

Maybe put a spring of rosemary in them to "flavor it up", smart/vitamin air.

I have an unreasonably strong urge to become an employee of that company and fill a certain percentage of those jars with painstakingly captured farts.

I found this $16 (plus shipping!) box of nothing on Amazon yesterday:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0186DL71S/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1513359314&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=box+of+nothing&dpPl=1&dpID=41iZBO9dL7L&ref=plSrch

And the reviewers are all complaining that they're cheaply made and the stickers are on crooked. Sorry your useless box doesn't meet your expectations...

I mean, I kind of get what people mean on this one. If you're buying a gag gift (which people do) it's kind of funny. But, if you're aware that you're purchasing an empty box with a sticker for $16, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect the sticker to be on straight...

On that note. Maybe the next thing is synthetic atmosphere from elsewhere, so carbon dioxide, nitrogen and sulphur dioxide for Venus. Carbon dioxide, nitrogen and argon for Mars.

And for the gas planets, hydrogen, helium and methane.

But these are "heritage" jars, according to the website.

That totally makes it worth £80.00.

But these are regular Kilner jars aren't they? I mean Kilner jars are great, the shape is iconic and the seal is clever. But they cost a tenner and come ready filled with air. I'm failing to see how they can reasonably claim that this is a selling point of their product rather than Kilner's product.

Maybe my sarcasm didn't make it through the internet.

I honestly have never even heard of Kilner jars. It is surely ridiculous to pay £80.00 for a jar of air.

Agreed it is ridiculous!

I heard your sarcasm and was separately ranting that the air company had appropriated Kilner's heritage. I can see that it wouldn't have landed if you weren't familiar with Kilner.

I feel the same way!  My issue is that I come up with a bunch of stupid ideas and then convince myself that they aren't worth anything because "I wouldn't pay money for that".  Turns out that people do pay money for stupid things.

Now I reread your post and it makes sense if one had heard of Kilner jars. Unfortunately (or fortunately), I am not one of those people. 😃

I remember reading the national geographic article on land diving https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_diving,,,, and thinking it would be cool.

BUT :
I was ~7 years old
realized that it was crazy dangerous, even at that age
see above for the capitalization possibilities....

but still many years later, I was dismayed (chuffed in Brit-speak?) to realize that I had missed the boat.

more on topic, I once invested in SealedAir,(packing bags) thinking that anybody who sold air couldn't go wrong and it flopped for me.  If my memory serves me correctly.

+1 but why do I still feel slightly bad about being jealous of those who make money this way?

I saw these people in a documentary my mum was watching a while back, and it sounded just as ridiculous then. They all went up to the top of some moor and opened the jars to let the air in, or something, as far as I can remember.

It's a completely pointless product, but it almost makes you wish you'd thought of it first.

I hope this means that there are plenty of side gig opportunities that I just wasn't aware of before I FIREd.
