Title: What makes you feel rich?
Post by: Misstachian on June 09, 2019, 08:45:12 PM
A few years ago I was talking with a friend who was admiring my usual leftovers-for-lunch habit. She lamented that eating leftovers makes her feel poor. "I hate it when I have to eat out of the fridge or freezer instead of just getting what I feel like - it makes me feel so poor!"

I looked at her, marveling, and said, "My freezer full of food makes me feel RICH."

And it does! A freezer full of meals makes me feel warm and comfortable knowing that if at a future moment I lack money or time, delicious food awaits me anyway. Growing a bit in my garden makes me feel rich (even though I definitely spend more money and time on it than I get edible food). A stocked fridge and pantry makes me feel rich.

I’ve returned to this thought pretty often, as did she in our many money conversations. I feel lucky that what makes me feel rich (other than money in the bank, which also works) is something both good for my life and within my grasp! Boy am I lucky it’s a freezer of food that does it for me and not, like, fancy cars or high heels.

What makes you feel rich? (I do mean other than little green employees, though that’s an understandable answer too....)

- Having a wonderful partner and a loving family. Their approval is the only approval that I seek, so I would never feel "poor" due to others' judgment.

- Having friends who are supportive and who are themselves successful. I am lucky that if my "Plan A" were to go bust, I could rely on my friends to help pick me up and probably help me get a job in the organisations that they are in (and me vice versa).

- Living in a society where I speak the language, I understand the customs and I fit into the culture. So much easier to feel content when you can mesh with society. I guess you would call this cultural privilege.

- Being able to travel, locally and globally. More often the former. A day trip is enough to restore the sense of wonder.

- Having a dog.

*A supportive husband, family, and friends. I’ve had a personal crisis this spring and learned that I have even more good friends than I realized. I’m very fortunate.

*A very flexible job that allows me to volunteer my time and talent towards important (to me) causes.

*The knowledge that all bills are paid comfortably every month, with money to spare.

*Pets and the means to care for them properly (including all vet bills).

Having fresh flowers in the house feels very *rich* to me (currently I have a leafy stalk of rhubarb tucked amongst lilies and it feels strange and exotic)

I grew up quite poor but did not feel it/realize it until I was older, in my family we were fresh food rich due to a large garden so I love gardening and having vibrant food around. Making my own food, teas and adding fresh herbs to everything makes me feel like I am winning at life, even though my NW is quite small :)

Several things make me feel rich:
1.  Having multiple containers of lip balm wherever I need them.
2.  Having an extra container of shampoo/shaving cream/toothpaste/etc. already in the medicine cabinet and ready to go when I squeeze the last dregs out of the current container.
3.  Never having to say, "Just put $20 of gas in the tank."  I can fill it and not worry about it.
4.  Having enough undershirts that I only have to wash them (and fold them... uggh) once a month.

There are other, bigger things, but it's the little things that I really appreciate.

Pretty simple for me, having a pool in my backyard.  It was a childhood dream that was not fulfilled growing up.  Then, when my wife and I bought our first house, it came with a pool and I was in love.  Allows me to run all summer in Houston, get hot and sweaty and then cool off so it opens up options, as well as gives the kids and their friends something to do outside all summer (and most of the winter).  It's a luxury item, but I luxuriate in it constantly :)

I can relate to the OP's friend because my DH kinda feels this way too, though it's not the feeling rich part, he just thinks food from restaurants is "better."

It all has to do with how you were raised. In my family and extended family, everyone feels like home cooking is mostly superior to restaurant food (barring the occasional specialty restaurant or experience). But it isn't that way for my husband's family. For family parties they'll always either go out to eat or get takeout. There was always just the general "vibe" that whatever they make themselves is inferior to what they buy. It was very disconcerting to me at the beginning, and to this day DH has zero inclination to learn how to cook, but at least he enjoys my cooking and understands the financial and health benefits to eating at home. Our friends are also mostly people who enjoy a potluck just as much as getting together at a restaurant. DH still gets lunch out every day and will sometimes have dinner with his buddies, but fortunately we make enough for that not to be a burden.

As for what makes me feel rich, it's a very specific thing: Being able to say yes to any therapy or activity that I think will be beneficial for my autistic son without having to worry about the cost.

one of those occasions where a friend of mine had troubles with his financial loan repayment.
i know it sounds like i am gloating, but i can't help it. i feel so much better that i took the steps to cut down on expenses, loans, and stuff to FIRE.
sometimes my friends think i am not enjoying life to the max, but when i hear these loan repayment issues, i really do feel richer.

Having a day off on a day that most others need to work, like now that we work 80%, not on Fridays.

The luxury not to worry about an unexpected large bill.

I live in a large apartment building and I love the feeling of leisurely heading to our building's gym at a reasonable morning hour on a weekday (say, 8ish,  not 5ish) while all the other folks are suiting-up and headed to work.  Time is luxury and makes me feel rich.

The luxury not to worry about an unexpected large bill.

Yes, this^
A couple of years ago I hit a deer and totaled my very mustachian Toyota. I had just put a couple thousand $ of work into it, thinking I would drive it another 5 years, so it was a disappointing loss (but no injuries thankfully). This was just before Thanksgiving and I was planning a holiday road trip of a thousand miles so I needed reliable transportation fast.

I searched online and was able to find my current vehicle and pay cash within days. It was dealer certified pre-owned so I was totally confident about taking a long road trip with it right away.

Before MMM this sort of thing would have been a major catastrophe and financial setback, but by the time it happened I was getting very close to FI so it was a minor bump. I was able to manage it all calmly and didn't have to cancel my road trip. This made me feel very rich.

Interesting that this article just popped up on CNN:

https://www.cnn.com/2019/05/31/success/feel-wealthy/index.html

Quote
How much does a person need to feel rich?

A recent survey from Charles Schwab revealed that a net worth of $2.27 million would be enough. But can you really put a number on it?
For many people, being wealthy means being financially independent and not having to work for a living, says Bradley Nelson, of Lyon Park Advisors. He says a family with a net worth of $2.27 million could easily be wealthy.
If that family spent a conservative 3% of their assets each year, they would have $68,100 a year to live on. That's more than the median household income in the United States of $61,000 -- without even having to work.

But that wouldn't be enough for some people.

The article gets even more ridiculous as you keep reading.  Apparently "inevitable comparisons to everyone you know" is an important budget item.

I also feel lucky that we have great health insurance (or, what passes for great health insurance in the US, anyway) & the ability to throw money at anything health wise that should crop up.

1. Talking with world-renowned people on my podcast and leading them to share their personal values and act on them -- heads of industry, an Olympic gold medalist, a Nobel Peace Prize, a Presidential Medal of Freedom, a 3-star Marine Corps General, leaders at West Point, the most watched TED talk of all time, a Pulitzer winner, Time's 100 most influential, an Americas Cup winner, . . .and they thank me for leading them and come back for second episodes. For details and names, here's the list of top downloaded episodes (http://joshuaspodek.com/podcast).

2. When I hit a fitness personal best, see new definition on abs, or finish a 10-day silent retreat. You can't pay someone to lift your weight for you, to meditate for you, or to eat for you. When I make myself healthier with a pile of fruit and vegetables, a few kettlebells, a rowing machine, running shoes, and a pressure cooker than someone paying hundreds of dollars a month for a gym membership, thousands a month on food, who knows how much on clothing, supplements, etc., I feel more than rich.

3. When I get invited to events that others pay thousands of dollars to attend because the hosts value me.

It started when I had my art up at Crobar, then one of Manhattan's top clubs. When I put up new pieces, they'd give me tables with an unlimited guest list. At the table next to mine would be finance guys who paid a few thousand dollars for a few hours.

Now I get invited to events to help make them more sustainable, where others pay thousands of dollars to attend.

4. When a year passes and I still haven't filled a load of trash and I haven't flown for another year. I'm helping create an environmental legacy that future generations will appreciate, not curse. It's the future. We'll all eventually quit the victimhood that says we're helpless to stop flying and buying needless crap and realize we like life more with less.

Encountering or talking with certain people.  Just a couple examples. My neighbor, a couple years older than me (I’m 38).  His finances are a total wreck thanks to a nasty divorce and then some purchases he made to compensate for the divorce and his midlife crisis.  There’s no way he will be able to retire until his 70s at best.  He had to tap his 401(k) for a home repair.

Uhhh.  One of my best friends unfortunately.  Nice guy and well educated.  But consistently makes one bad decision after another.  Lives in HCOLA, eats out all the time, has stretches of unemployment that go on for months.  He’s 38 but lives like a 23 year old out of college.

Like a lot of people, they both think retirement planning is something you don’t really need to think about seriously until your 50s.

I don't know that anything makes me feel rich.  But a few things make me feel really lucky:

Being able to quit my job and go back to graduate school in my late 40s to embark on a career where I will earn even less money than before.  Simply because I want to (both go to school and start a new career).

Not worrying about my DH losing his job.  If he does, we'll be fine.

Things like car repair bills, unexpected dental work, a leaky roof, etc. are annoying, but not really "bad" news for us.

Being able to contribute to go-fund-me campaigns that tug at my heartstrings.

I was recently without hot water for a week, which was pretty unpleasant, but it made me think about how many people in the world don't have access to clean water, let alone hot and cold running water on demand. So now I feel rich every time I turn on the faucet to take a hot shower.

1. Spending an entire day riding my bike, with no other agenda, carrying everything I need for the 8 or 10 or 12 hours with me. It feels like a huge privilege!

2. Having a full stocked kitchen, with all the ingredients to make anything I could think of

3. Feeling fully and totally fulfilled by how I spend my free time.

Similar to the OP (and others) - I feel rich every time I go grocery shopping.  Not only can I afford to buy whatever I want, but I'm fortunate enough to live in both a locale and time where I can get an absolutely astounding variety of food and food-like substances any day/week/month of the year.  Local, Organic, Low-cost, low-footprint, exotic - it's all at my fingertips. Wine from a dozen different countries and produce from a dozen local farms. What an amazing time to be alive (provided you live in the 'right' country and not in a food desert).

One thing that always comes to mind when I think about this question is frozen berries.

I can't believe that I can just go to a Costco 1.5 miles from my house and load up on as many organic frozen berries as I want.  Strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, etc.  As much as I want!  And then I can come back home and make all sorts of shakes with them.

It always makes me feel very rich and also somewhat wrong at the same time.  I didn't plant, grow, pick, or transport any of these berries.  Yet here they are, fresh and sweet, in unlimited supply, in my kitchen.  This always drives home how privileged and ridiculously lucky I am, and most of us are.  And how, on the flip side and as Homer Simpson acknowledged, the machinery of capitalism is oiled with the blood of its workers....

Good health is probably the biggest thing to make one feel rich and fortunate in life. It is so important and yet so easy to take for granted until you run into an issue.

Looking around in my house and seeing that our hard work really paid off. When we bought this house it was completely stripped, didn't have floors or anything. We've done it up over the past 4 years and continue to improve it every month - and we're doing it on a low budget and use mostly used materials. We hardly had any furniture when we moved in except for a few second hand Ikea items and we're slowly replacing that by nice furniture, again we mostly got them used and renovated them ourselves.

My favourite places in the house are the pantry that I built myself, filled up with healthy food, and the linen closet, a piece of furniture that used to belong to my grandmother, filled with nice looking linen that we mostly got used and free/almost free too and some homemade quilts from mostly recycled or gifted materials. We've got shelter, blankets, food, what more do we want?

I also feel rich whenever we have some bad luck that other people would call an emergency. If an item is damaged or stolen or stops working we can fix it or replace it and we don't have to think twice about it. If we can't fix it ourselves, we can hire someone else to fix it without worrying about how we're going to pay the bill. It's only a minor nuisance that we need to make arrangements for it.

Travelling, for sure, especially to expensive places. Every time I'm overseas, there's at least one moment where I go "Holy shit, I can't believe that even as a receptionist I can travel to six countries a year and also amass wealth like crazy and retire in my 30s". And like, we don't even have to save up for trips, we just book them when we want to and pay for it out of cash flow.

I have a friend in his 50s who quit his job with almost no savings knowing that a new job will come up or he will move in with his parents in another state. He doesn't worry because he literally has nothing to lose. I've built safety net on top of safety net to keep myself from worrying about losing everything...so maybe that makes me feel rich?

That and nice bed sheets.

Having a 50% savings rate makes me feel like a serious badass. Having grown up in a low-income household, I sometimes think, "Damn, I'm loaded!", despite only making an average software developer's salary. It would only seem like gloating to somebody who's unaware just how powerful even this much money is for living a comfortable life. Sadly, that perspective is often lost on people, so you have to be careful how you express your excitement. It's all perspective.

Stache is still in the early accumulations stages. Kinda funny, but when you don't need much to live off of, making more than you need feels like a real treat

I can't say I feel rich (most people would say I am) but I'm very content,
after going through a hurricane which destroyed our business, and did $98,000
of damage too our home.
So here we lost our source of income, and must rebuild our house,
and there is zero financial stress.
Hey maybe I am rich. :-)

I really get what you mean! We "only" have an average family income, but we are DINKs early on in our careers, our parents never earned that much in their entire careers and had several kids to feed.

We are very open about money in our family and recently my mum asked how much I earned. I only work 3 days a week now because I went back to uni for a Master's. I told her how much and she thought that was my fulltime salary and she said that was an amount to be happy with. She was a bit shocked when I told her that's what I earn for 3 days a week.

Just about anything modern should make people feel rich! Years ago ice was a luxury! When people had ice boxes, the ice had to be cut out of lakes, stored, shipped and carried up flights of stairs to put into ice boxes. Now we have refrigerators that make it automatically. Being able to turn up the heat and not having to gather firewood for a fireplace to warm the house. Having an AC unit to cool my bedroom at night and my livingroom anytime I want. My house full of food. My animals well taken care of. Like another said, a well full of water that is available at any time I want it. Electric lights! Movies on demand day and night on tv.

To think the way people lived 100 years ago, people should be grateful for what we have today.

Exactly. Plus no fear if I lose my job. Being able to eat fresh fruit every day. Keeping bees in my back yard.

Incidentally, my wife always feels very poor. She is very afraid of being poor in old age. I doubt anything will change that as it is bone-deep.

Having an emergency fund. Being able to cash-flow money emergencies.

Smaller things; when my kids need something like a new backpack or lunchbox or fee for school, not sweating the cost. Being able to afford a pet. Not sweating about buying a new pair of shoes or item of clothing, even if more money than I wanted to spend.

Walking home from work to my own home. Especially when my house is tidy and clean, I feel rich (extra double points a bouquet in the house).

Oh gosh, SO many things make me feel rich!! I grew up poor, living paycheck to paycheck, and spent time actually homeless when I was 12 and 13. The things that make me feel rich today are:
-Being able to pay for my son to go to college next year. He got a scholarship to a private school and we can cashflow the rest
-amazing vacations the last few years, taking my little kids to see the world
-having a dog and being able to take appropriate care of her (we had dogs growing up, but they were kind of neglected like we kids were)
-being able to go to the doctor or dentist, knowing I have the money in my HSA account to cover OOP max, though I still cringe at the high expense
-having a nice house with a pool two miles from a pretty flexible and (mostly) stable job
-maxing out everything and still being able to save after taxes
-being able to donate usable goods to local people who need them (refugee group most recently) instead of needing to sell them for the money
-the amazing luxury of being able to buy any food I want/need, and a nice reverse osmosis system for clean, tasty water
-knowing we could FIRE now if we moved to a L(er)COL area and scaled back our fun spending...we are working for our wants now, not our needs
-being able to run the A/C and heat whenever I want. That was NOT something we could do when I was a kid, ever.
-being able to keep my cars safely maintained. I will never forget the scary brakes on the car when I was about 13

So many things. Thanks for the prompting to think about this. Really, I am so very, VERY fortunate; it's easy to lose sight of it sometimes.

Warm Showers. On demand heated water is one of the biggest luxuries to me.  I think we take it for granted, but I’ve always thoroughly  enjoyed showers and often think about how fortunate/rich I am to take one every day.

+1
I think cheap hot water is the crowning achievement of the 20th Century.  A hot shower revives me every time.

I'm likely going to have foot surgery within the next year.

I feel rich when I think about how it will suck if my insurance doesn't fully cover something, but I have the ability to choose the doctor and the treatment that gives me the opportunity to have the best possible outcome, not merely the one that I can afford/that my insurance company will cover.

- Having a well stocked store cupboard, and knowing that every item in it was bought at a great sale price
- Having multiple sets of sheets. Some people don't, I have no idea why! I don't want to have to wash and dry a set of sheets just to change the bed every time.
- It's the start of winter in NZ, so my huge big feather duvet makes me feel rich. I also like knowing that I bought two old second hand ones, drycleaned one and used the feathers from the other to overstuff the first. It actually cost me less than $50 for a heavy weight, overstuffed, feather down duvet inner.
- Being able to switch on the heater any time I like. Being cold makes me feel poor. Assume that I put on a sweater before I get to the heater-turning-on stage!
- The well fed cat fast asleep in a warm house makes me feel rich.

Me too, I always feel rich after I've been to Sam's Club to load up on produce AND fill up my car for a few cents cheaper per gallon.

YES. I feel this way about good tomatoes. My immigrant grandparents (and my dad and his siblings as kids) spent their summer weekends picking tomatoes to supplement my grandfather's income. Seven kids in a 3-bedroom bungalow.

My husband and I live with only pets in our 3-bedroom home, and I can afford any tomatoes I want at the grocery store on my comfortable wages from my at-home desk job.

There's probably a proper way to fold fitted sheets. I can't be arsed finding it.... or doing it, even if I found it. I can live with squarish piles! Life's too short for anything beyond squarish piles, like moving the couch to vacuum under it or cleaning behind the fridge.

This.  When unexpected bills come in, it's annoyance, not a crisis.  Knowing we are not one ER visit / car repair / broken appliance / family emergency away from disaster is an amazing relief and not to be taken for granted.

2 - going to see my grandparents and not caring about the cost of the tickets or rental car. Offering my sister a plane ticket to go since she hasn’t been in a couple years.

3 - in-laws bought us a condo! Debt free for life now.

4 - offering to buy my mom a new car or make payments for her

5 - family asking for financial advice or help planning / budgeting

A paid off home, a job that brings me joy & fulfillment, the ability to stay at home with my son during school breaks & summer break (I'm a teacher), knowing that my son attends excellent public preschool, food in the freezer & canned goods in the basement, the fact that my son's cousins are less than an hour's drive away, not feeling stressed about bills each month. I have so much to be thankful for that I usually feel like the other shoe will drop at any point...my life seems almost too good. So, I'm trying to find ways to focus on being present/living in the moment.

Riding a very nice train to work, bordering on luxurious.

Going for a one-hour work-out at a very nice, large gym near my home.

Using my $200 Bose noise-cancelling headphones at work.

Never having to fix anything around the house (renting FTW).

Occasionally casual-hiring a newish convertible for a few hours for some late-night city driving. Fun!

Catching a flight for a holiday or a work trip (I move to a new country every couple of years).

I actually think this is the best answer and the reason we are all on this forum to begin with.  I’m at a point financially where if I got fired tomorrow my savings is large enough to where I could “retire” and work part time and be just fine.  A layoff wouldn’t cause panic in my family.  My 10 year old son wouldn’t feel a thing.  We’d keep our nice house, eat great food and life would go on pretty much the same.  That’s a great feeling.

In March of 2018 I went to Morocco for two weeks. It was awesome, I consider it a highlight of my life, and remembering it makes me feel insanely privileged.

In November of 2018, I had to use my FU money and walk away from a toxic, bigoted Director. I had enough to pay my rent, do some cheap travel, and get certified as a SUP instructor. That’s insanely rich. For an added bonus, my FU find is at or about the same place as when I quit. I just got a new job that will pay my bills. It’s part time, so I’m going to find a volunteer position as well. Once again, insanely rich.

A clean and tidy apartment where no one bothers me lol

Knowing that in the past, when I did have a chunk of money to spend freely, I chose not to take expensive vacations or buy a huge TV or designer clothes etc. because I didn't feel like I really wanted them. So now that I'm back to the beginning again, I feel rich because I'm free of envy for what other people might buy, because I know I value other things more.

Does that make sense? :)

Edited to add: I also feel rich right now, even though I'm actually money-poor, because I've finally gotten control of my spending habits.  Even though I only had $41 in my bank account until payday today, at last I feel like I know where my money goes, and when I spend it, it goes places with purpose, not just leaking away because I have no control over myself. It's a great feeling to see that I've made so much progress with my issues with money over the last few years.

I only had one set of sheets before marriage.  I would wash and then put right back on my bed.  I liked this because I didn't have to fold the fitted sheet.  I still cannot competently fold a fitted sheet, they resemble somewhat squarish piles.

This is funny cause I only have one set of sheets and never even thought of having a second set. I thought you always just washed and dried them and then put them back on the bed? You have to make the bed either way.

If you have a family, each with one set of sheets on their bed, and you wish to change the sheets? That's a huge amount of washing and drying that has to be done that day. If you have multiple sheet sets, you can save up the washing to a sunny day where the sheets will dry on the line. If you have multiple sheet sets you can change your bed "off schedule" for some reason like illness, pet or child accident etc. If you have multiple sheet sets, you can choose a winter flannelette or a summer cotton. They're so handy to have around - a spare sheet over the sofa when the kids are eating cheese balls in front of a video, for instance. Or one over the top layer of your bedding on a wet night when the cat will come in with muddy paws. Or pop one down on the floor when the friend's baby comes over and wants to crawl around. Hell, even a toga party!

I was taught that you have three per person of everything like sheet sets and towels - one in use, one in the wash, one in the linen cupboard.

When doing a wedding registry, they encourage 3 sets saying "one on the bed, one put away, one in the laundry". I didn't question it at the time and it does make sense to me to make the bed right away instead of having to wait until the sheets are washed and dried (especially if line drying); however, there isn't really a good reason that you need a set to be put away while you're washing the set that just came off the bed.

I don't know, I've had a lot of times when I've had a dreadful flu or stomach bug and just managed to get up and have a shower and change the bed. It would have been just gross to get back into a sickness-sweat bed. I've even done that twice in a row. I had the sheets to do it.

Sheets often don't dry in a day, at least not where I live? Even now in early summer it's still raining quite often. I'm glad that when I changed my sheets this morning I had another dry set ready to go on the bed, because after some sudden heavy rain I think they are now more wet than when I took them out of the machine this morning :)

"Do you dry sheets on a line outside?" and "How many sets of sheets (per bed) do you own?" are good ideas for a poll!

My answers:

1) No (hoa doesn't allow it if I wanted to) and 2) I use one set of sheets repeatedly until I get bored or they start looking worn. Then older sets move to the closet to use in a sheet emergency or for picnics/rags/drop cloths.

Yep, this is me. I actually realize I do have two extra set of sheets but I never use them except when guests visit and I have to make up the sofa beds. I wash, dry (in a dryer) sheets and put back on the bed.

Regarding the 3 of everything rule, well of course they’d recommend that, you just bought more stuff. The set sitting in the closet is kinda useless. I get it if you line dry things. I’m trying to get away with less stuff and it’s funny to realize how much you don’t “need”.

Three sheets/bed is a pretty good idea if you have little kids. It only takes one round of stomach flu to appreciate that, even if you've got your own washer and dryer.

I'm a morning person. I want to change the sheets and make the bed first thing, and it would annoy me to look at the unmade bed all day.

Funny, for me, I feel rich when I've got more than enough. I have three sets of sheets (useful when we have visitors, which is quite often) and 5 regular towels, 3 bath towels, probably about 10 kitchen/dish towel sets. Yes, that's way more than a couple need (the only time everything is in use is Christmas) but it feels very rich to just be able to grab a new dish towel when the one you're using is wet instead of having to wait for it to dry. I'm also really happy to have maybe 10 plates and 15 cups.

Of course I'm not defending hoarding but having a little bit extra is great. I also don't get stuff new, most of this kind of stuff was inherited or gifted by someone who was going to throw it away otherwise. (Yes, there are people who give their whole set of plates away when one or two were broken and they can't find relacements).

Somehow if I postpone a purchase long enough, it will eventually be given to me for free by someone.

Good sources for kitchen items are Hyacinth Bouquet-type relatives and old ladies looking to give away all the possensions they have collected over a lifetime, if you don't mind old fashioned styles. I have two plates left over from a set that I had from nu great aunt and eating from those ugly green and yellow plates always brings back happy memories.

Another option would be thrift shopping / garage sale but that's suspisciously similar to regular shopping, except a bit more mustachian. I'd rather wait until stuff turns up at my doorstep. It helps if everyone thinks you're a pauper and can't afford buying plates.

What about the devil's advocate answer - does anyone feel rich due to knowing that he or she has more job security, privilege or money than others?

Sure, it's not the cornerstone of MMM - but it doesn't hurt to have money and privilege.

(Yes, there are people who give their whole set of plates away when one or two were broken and they can't find relacements).

I should meet up with some of those people. Our family of 4 is down to 4 bowls, 4 salad plates, and 6 dinner plates. DH and I don't have enough interest in shopping to sort through a website and find a new set we agree on, let alone are willing to spend $ on.

Flea markets have this stuff for cheap. DH recently bought some wine glasses of the type that we have, but where a few were broken.
I have also said to DH that maybe after this, we should just get Ikea wine glasses and not so many...

I feel rich in knowing that I don't have to "save up". In the event that an intermittent expense of below $500 or so appears, I can just pay using a piece of this two-week's paycheck without much thought to it.

There are so many things to be thankful for - like the people we have around us but its our things and our freedoms that make me feel rich.

We recently replaced a car for cash money for our eldest. No rush. Plenty of time to find a private sale with low miles for the right price. Final choice was a gas sipper with some years on it but below 100K miles. Seller was a nice person to work with and very agreeable. No banks and no dealers and no debt. Lots of MMM lessons built into that exercise for our eldest about savings and careful shopping and working hard.

We feel fortunate to live some place that other people visit for outdoorsy day trips and camping. I can come home from work and go for a long bike ride on rural roads and watch the sunset. I can bicycle to and from my job.

I can sit on the porch with DW and watch the sun dip below the horizon, the fireflies come out, the stars appear in the sky, the night critters start to talk to each other. Other people have to drive a long distances to visit the country nights that we can enjoy every day.

Feels rich to have an ebike. I can get a bit of help for the motor to climb the hills around here or to rush home a little quicker before a rain arrives.

Air conditioning. I've lived long periods without it and know I can cope. Nice that we don't NEED to when the weather is hot and sticky.

Enjoying an evening out with large Broker/Dealer CFOs - including ANC qualifiers.

Telling the same folks that I'm out early so that I can read my kids a bedtime story.

Solving problems solo that the same firms' best IT teams are unable to slice.

Picking at the thoughts of highly successful folks - and offering ideas of improvements they may not have contemplated in return.

Coaching folks into a path of financial or/and health freedom. (perhaps I should start charging?.... Nah)

Coaching kids science, problem solving, and how to use their brains.

Writing.

Taking off an evening to eat a roasted chicken with a bottle of wine and a good book outside.

Checking off the next physical achievement (I lost 100 pounds of fat, gained some muscle, and now know how to use nutritional science combined with targeted exercise to hit each goal I set)

I hade to do that some time ago, replacing 4 tires because of one beyond repair. It was an annoying extra expense, but we don't really notice it in the yearly savings.

I live on a street that is a pedestrian path to a sports venue and some entertainment areas.  When there are a lot of people traipsing up and down the sidewalks to their cars, I feel rich when I turn off the sidewalk and hop into my house.   I think all those tourists must be jealous of my living so close that I can just leave a restaurant and go right to bed without having to sit in traffic and then drive an hour home.

Interesting question posed in the OP!

To me, I feel rich when I pay for a meal eating out when I whip out my wallet and then plunk down my share of the bill in cash, rounded up to include a nice tip. Friends always marvel that I carry considerable amounts of cash.  I don't have to faff around waiting to take my turn when everyone else is queueing up to use the card payment machine. I've eaten, I'm done, I'm happy, I've paid. I don't need to quibble and screw around with trying to work out my exact share of the bill etc etc.

I don't know if rich is the right description, but it's incredibly satisfying when I see the email every two weeks that the deposit has been received in my brokerage account, and I stop and say to myself "Oh yeah it's payday today, I totally forgot!".  I feel so fortunate to be in a position where I'm not waiting on a paycheck.  It wasn't always that way...

Also, knowing I could (not would) purchase just about anything (not everything) I could want makes me feel really rich.  Those things aren't anywhere near luxury and I don't buy most of them, but the combination of a solid financial position combined with a healthy dose of Stoicism is a satisfying place to be.  Just knowing that if I really want something I can afford it is probably more satisfying than actually buying it.

Last week my mom was debating the cost of an airline ticket to attend a memorial service in another town. She had a free place to stay, and free rides from the airport and to/from the service, but didn't want to spend the admittedly high ticket price. It was so nice to tell her (without thinking anything of it!), "Mom, I'm happy to give you $xxx toward the ticket" and because I know my mom well enough, I had to add, "It'll be part of your birthday present!"

She did hem and haw. My brother called me "Hey big spender... do I have to offer Mom the same thing now?" and he decided to... so between us, she agreed to go. It gives me a warm feeling to know that a spontaneous gesture like that - which doesn't put me out in any way - will allow my mom time with good friends, even for a sad occasion.

I frequently forget which week is payday, which I realize is its own level of security and peace-of-mind.  I've seen how others stress about how many days/hours are left until they get paid next, and I feel fortunate that's not me.  At my previous job we typically got paid on a Friday, and a few times a year there'd be a glitch on payroll and it wouldn't arrive until Monday morning.  Some of the workers would wind up seriously altering their weekend plans and complain (with some validity) about the impacts of not being paid on time.

This, for sure. Years ago we were the type that would just be hoping that there was enough money in the account to buy whatever it was we were buying. Now we forget it's payday. It's a wonderful change.

Also, a few years ago we had the experience of my husband's debit card number getting hacked. Someone charged $2,500 worth of stuff the day before we were supposed to leave for our (already budgeted for) vacation. We just shrugged and said "Eh, the bank will get it back to us." Two years prior, we would have seriously considered cancelling the vacation because we wouldn't have been able to afford to go.

I feel rich because I live in a LCOL area with a house, no debt, and a net worth around $1.6M per household member, and everyone I work with plans to keep working into their 60's while I'll be long retired by that age.

Also, never having had to worry about bills or unexpected expenses in many years, having a great family, good friends, and good health, plus having a very good job that I enjoy the majority of the time while being FI and not really needing to work.

It's also the little things that make me feel rich, like a full pantry.  I just got back from a vacation to Kenya and Rwanda combined with a stay in an apartment in Toulouse, France for a week while my husband attended a conference and jet-setting around the world actually makes me feel rather poor.  Because I don't have enough money to avoid airlines treating me like shit.  Of course, I did feel rich (in like a not-great way) when visiting with many locals in Kenya and Rwanda.  Because of course, I am rich.

But what makes me feel most rich is buying a huge supply of toilet paper and having plenty at home.  I also like being stocked up on other things, like soap, sponges, Q-tips, etc.  It makes me feel safe, which means I feel rich.  But somehow, TP is the ultimate signifier to me.  If I have plenty of TP at home, all is gonna be ok.

When the waiter at a restaurant cautiously asks whether you still want a side order or another drink because, “that will be extra.”  Of course, I don’t care about the extra charge and wouldn’t have even noticed it on my bill but apparently others do or they wouldn’t ask.

One of my favorite quotes about money goes something like this,

“Most people who accumulate money will need to make a choice between living like a mult-millionaire or being a multi-millionaire but few ever make enough to do both.”

We chose the latter.  So modest homes, cars and attire often confuse people into thinking we would care about an up-charge on our meal.

Yes. I spent $300 at Costco last week to stock up the freezer and pantry. We could easily afford it, and now we won't run out of ground beef, chicken, or coffee beans for weeks or olive oil, bar soap, toilet paper, contact lens solution, or toothpaste for months.

Weird.
We have just one Walmart in our area, and it's a 40 minute drive so we go there only a few times a year, but each time we've been it's sparkling clean and almost clinically sterile, in an almost uncomfortable sort of way.  The only smells I can recall are the disinfectant cleaner they seem to use on everything from the floors to the carts.  Ironically it the artificial-sterility that makes me no want to go there, much in the way that the uncleanliness of other Walmarts seems to be keeping others away.

I don't know for sure but the smell is always at the entrance where they keep the electric shopping carts.  My wife told me that people sometimes just do their business in the cart rather than trying to find a bathroom.   It is hard to believe that is true but something sure does smell at that end of the store nearly every time I go in.

I still think it is worthwhile to save $2 per bottle of DEET by shopping at Wal-mart vs the local sporting goods store in our town so I just hold my nose.   Guess I am not rich.

Well, the check kiting of my youth is long gone.

Being debt free* except for the obligatory mortgage at 3.5%

Being 18 months short of my 80k old age retirement goal.

Swiping my card and not really caring how much things cost. I decided I wanted it, I trust my desires enough not to lead me astray. The thing costs what it costs.

Loaning 15k a year back to help out my trustworthy sister dig herself out of the interest cycle.

A month in Hawaii in a self decided 6 week vacation

Going back to college on my own dime.

Visiting multiple cities/states for work and getting to see this massive country on someone else's dime. This summer is Boston.

Getting a dog walker and a house cleaner this summer because finally making more than that would lose and the pit bull deserve a midday walk to blow off steam

My loving expenses are so low that I could live about two years on what's in my bank account.

I’ve been feeling very rich lately. First, I never worry about utility bills or other bills like that that vary month to month. I used to stress in the summer or winter when the bills would spike. Now, it’s not a big deal but I still try to keep the bills down. No need to go crazy with the utilities just because I can.

And another huge thing that makes me feel rich actually happened almost a year ago. I struggled at work for a few years, like full on depression and nervous breakdown. In a lot of ways I loved my job but had serious ethical issues with certain things. That was the catalyst for me looking into MMM. At the time we couldn’t really afford to leave and my mental state was terrible. We worked hard to earn some FU stash. And last summer I had a job offer on the table. It would even be a pay cut and I was in a position to say yes. Told my boss about the offer but he wanted me to stay. I stayed but said the ethical issues would have to change.  As of now, the program has been changed. The ethical issues are now resolved. Ultimately our clients benefit from the change, I can sleep at night knowing I’m doing the right thing and I love my job again. I don’t think I’d be here without MMM. And the ability to stand up for what I believe in because I have some FU stash make me feel super rich.

You're using BADASSITY (TM) to make the world a better place!  Nice!

My work is offering overtime for the next couple of weeks, at time-and-a-half pay.

I said no. It's not high enough pay to make any real difference to my savings rate, and I relish my free time too much.

I would have jumped at the opportunity a few years ago, but my stash is at a level now where I can turn those "opportunities" down.

Edit: I am not even remotely close to FI, but the stash that I do have has already started giving me freedom!

In the general, being richis whatever I want to buy I can buy. If we Need to spend money on something, we can afford it.

In the  particular, sometimes I feel like
The Queen of England because I don’t carry cash,  I have a credit card and sometimes I take that with me, sometimes I just go with D.h and he’s my money person. I just don’t pay that much attention to money on the daily,  it is  plastic and then the bill comes in and he pays it.

Once a year I look at our assets. That snapshot of our assets as of December 31 is what keeps me either spending at a level where I’m perfectly happy or it could mean that I need to cut back if I see that number change drastically.

I am self employed and last month, I made less money than usual (about half) because half of my students are taking a summer break. I didn't have to worry about having enough money this month because I budget everything one month in advance. I simply reduced how much money I save for vacation for this month.

I feel rich, but most importantly, I feel free. I don't have to worry about having less work coming in. I can enjoy my free time while it lasts and be ready to be busy once school starts again.

I feel rich knowing that I can help my family if they need it. I have had a sister and a mother both come stay with me at my house in the last 2 years. Granted, I wasn't in love with the situation but it was great that I could do something about it. I know have plenty of food in my house and a more than enough for a small emergency if it comes up.

Those alone make me feel leagues above most people.

I considered many previous replies on my quest to figure out what makes me feel rich.
Things don't make me feel rich. I can't say I've ever had any thing that made me feel rich.
A new car was just another thing.
Buying things makes me feel less rich.
I marvel at the marvelous things I own, but they are just marvels, nothing really special about them especially considering how many different types I have.
Luxuries make me feel that those things could be considered luxurious, but they don't make me feel rich.
A house that paid for itself made me feel secure, but not rich.
Having plenty of time makes me feel relaxed (or bored) but never rich.
Having money doesn't make me feel rich, I just am alive and happen to have money.

I have looked deep into my soul, and the only thing that makes me feel rich is having more money than I used to have. Going from $40 to $60 would make me feel rich. The relative increase is all that matters to my brain. So there is my answer that seemed like it would be deep but is actually very shallow and factual.

Knowing that we can cash flow just about anything <$5k and have liquid access for anything <$25k. Knowing that if I get laid off and I make $0, we can maintain our exact lifestyle for ~3 years, and if we make a few cuts to the fun budget, we can make it ~6 years in a lean setting. Knowing that I could potentially switch to part-time work once we have kids and will still coast to an early 50s FIRE.

Being able to buy anything I need without thinking about whether I can afford it makes me feel rich.

Being able to buy most anything I can reasonably want out of cash in the bank makes me feel fabulously wealthy. Now I can’t go buy a super car or a private jet or a new mansion, but anything I might want for our house through current savings or a little bit of planning?  I can do it, and that’s pretty nice.

Being able to plan the route our summer vacation without worrying about high fuel prices and toll roads.
Being able to book a boat transport to bring us deep into the mountains in an easy way without worrying about the price. If we are just two, he will charge 1000 NOK. If more people book the boat, then it will be 300 NOK per person. We can afford both.

A lot of mine are pretty consumerist. The key isn't that I do them all the time, but that I *can* if I want to.

-I can go to the mall and buy new work clothes (or even fun clothes!) At full price from nicer stores.

-I can own 10 pairs of exactly the perfect underwear (Soma vanishing edge).

-I can buy my kids whatever clothes I want (I had one pair of jeans for a while as a kid). Same with shoes- I just buy them new Keens when they outgrow them!

-I can hire whatever childcare is best for my kids without regards to cost (nanny in summer rather than cheaper camp where my son was bullied)

-We have a high deductible medical plan and we just write checks when bills come with no stress. We go to the hospital without worrying about money (I just had an emergency appendectomy out of state- that should be a fun bill!)

-Similarly when my kids need therapy we do it without worrying about cost.

-We fly places to go on vacation! So fancy.

-I can buy whatever food I want at the store! (I don't, but I can!). When DS needed special expensive single serving protein shakes I just bought them with no concerns!

-I am not worried about one of us losing our jobs. It would suck and we wouldn't want to live on half the income indefinitely bit we would be fine. Either of us could quit if we were miserable. That makes me feel very rich.

Apparently a lot of things make me feel rich! We try to constantly reinforce to the kids that we are rich and that their life is not typical.

Living with a view makes me feel rich.  I usually prefer rural places, like the mountains or something waterfront, but cities can have great views too.

Our mountain place isn't on a high ridge, but it has both a sunrise and a sunset view.   It's great to sip my morning coffee or afternoon beer with views across the valley.

Not living paycheck to paycheck
Ocean view
Full pantry/fridge/freezer
Quality items that works/looks like new despite almost constant use (Laptop, phone, bike, certain clothes)
When I save for something for months and it goes on sale for less then anticipated

Yesterday taking a nice walk whole foods and buying $30 worth of food (hot buffet and deli) to feed me and the kids instead of having to cook.
Having a membership to the Y, can go swimming whenever I want.
Not exactly rich but peace of mind; having my kid get into a good public school that is close distance to house.

I don't feel rich at this time because 2019 so far was full of unexpected emotional and financial hits (illness and death of beloved pet, myself having health scare with $2600 worth of medical bills, illness and death of family member which meant extra trip home plus canceling a vacation which I couldn't get money back).

But, I am looking forward to loan from work (due to divorce and big house bill) paid off this November (575/month). And loan for car paid off next June (270). So not there yet but this time next year it should feel a lot better (knock on wood!)

We recently went on a vacation to the Boston area. I was horrified at the cost of certain things but I paid them knowing that it doesn’t really matter if I pay $8 for a scotch at the bar or the prevailing Boston price of $12, their much vaunted lobster rolls? $17 in a casual restaurant, $27 at the hotel. Good lord.

The cost of our car rental was god awful but I didn’t shop around for a “deal” I just paid whatever costs. I was annoyed with car rental price but in the end it makes no difference to our lifestyle and I wont worry about it. And then there was the cost of the hotel to stay in at the airport the night before we flew out. I’m not even going to tell you people what it cost, I couldn’t even express it verbally to DH it was just too awful. I have to put it out of my mind. But the actual dolkars out doesnt affectbour lifestyle—that makes me fell rich.

Since then  I have vowed to never rent a car or drive a car in the Boston area or the entire congested East Coast area as  there’s too much angst and expenses associated with that. I would fly into Boston and catch a train to wherever I need to go.

I thought that was the regular price for a lobster roll. I'm in a LCOL area, recently bought a lobster roll from a food truck for $18, a very small one. At a casual restaurant here, it's about the same price.

- Perspective that I am lucky. Once I traveled to the country my family's from (luckily my siblings paid for that ticket). Most of the country is very rural without plumbing, electricity, and things like refrigerators and toilets. Once, one of my cousins who lived there asked me what I do. I mentioned a lot of things that were leisurely, like going to movies or trying new restaurants or whatever. He was amazed that I get to do so many fun things. He said he doesn't get to do stuff like that because he has to work on the farm all day. We were a similar age.
- Clean water. Some people in America don't even have this, sadly.
- The ability to max out my 401k and IRA and not feel worried about covering other bills. I used to not be able to do this, because I was paid so little.
- Not living paycheck to paycheck.
- Not having debt.
- The ability to take of any vet bills if they come up. I mention this because recently I mentioned I had to pick up medication for my cat because her tooth got extracted due to infection, and they felt sorry for me as if it was so expensive and put me out, probably because it would've been too much for them. I'm grateful to be able to do what needs to be done.
- Sipping on wine at home on quiet evenings.
- Fresh flowers. They really do cheer me up!
- A fine cup of tea.
- Ability to purchase and consume fresh, healthy foods easily. Because some people live in food deserts, or they just can't afford to.
- Fewer material things. Maybe this is weird, but I feel freer with a relatively more minimal amount of possessions. They don't own me.
- Most importantly, free knowledge and resources to better myself, always readily available from libraries, books, internet, etc. People underestimate the power of knowledge. Without knowledge and the access to it, I wouldn't be where I am today.

Love this! One weird thing about my neighborhood is that even though homes generally have two car garages, people are forced to park one car outside as the garages are filled with crap. As I sit here with the lower left half of my face numbed with novocaine, two things:

1. A lifetime of high-quality dental care, which meant that I just had my very first cavity filled at age 41.
2. The financial means to afford regular dental checkups easily and to have the cavity filled almost as soon as it was found, rather than waiting until it worsened beyond the surface enamel.

Materialistically speaking, knowing that I have enough money to walk into a health food store and comfortably afford cacao butter, raw cashews, etc (high quality vegan baking ingredients) makes me feel wealthy. The one area I splurge in is groceries because I am investing in my health.

Otherwise, knowing I have a life partner who is equally as naturally money conscious and WANTS to combine finances even though he makes much more than me makes me feel wealthy in the relationship department. Especially when I hear friends telling me they "could never" have a joint bank account with their partner because they don't trust them with money.

Carrying and using the highest cash note denomination, which in this country is £50 (~$60). These circulate much less frequently than the smaller £20 and £10 denominations. Personally I like to pay in cash for as much stuff as I can and use £50s quite frequently.

Well, I am still rebuilding after divorce, but I feel rich knowing that I am now 100% in control of my own financial destiny... and free from a chronically underemployed, money wasting, narcissistic serial cheater!

Regarding lobster rolls, I grew up in CT in the 1970s & 1980s and I swear McDonalds had a lobster roll for a time.  (And I also just recently visited Boston and balked at the $28 hotel lobster roll, even though I really wanted one!)
