There will always be people who crave "stuff".  Hey, I like "stuff" too, to some degree.  The key is to be happy with the "stuff" you have and don't be envious of the "stuff" your neighbor has.  Feels like I'm delivering a sermon here.

OMG! It's a manufactured home! They're getting all competitive over that? LOL! A town near me is called Clayton, so I had to look a little closer. I'm happy to report is on the wrong ocean. In my town a stick-built house of that square footage would be likely to have two commas on the price tag. And there's no such thing as a mobile home, pre-fab, park model, whatever they want to call it in these here parts. I get why it makes you rage though. I think it's a pretty clever way to sell something generally seen as um, downmarket. I'm sorry, I know that sounds snob-ish, it's just reality (Realty?) over here in my corner of the world. Just for grins, here's a snapshot from a neighboring town. I set the filters for 2000-2400 sf, with no other restrictions.

Our small town county fair usually has a mobile home setup for tours. They get nicer and nicer each year it seems. Granite and stainless steel appliances. I just can't figure out why a person would opt for that over a regular stick built home. The payments must be similar once you have the "luxury" items.

The thing that never changes are quality. I see seams. I see doors with two hinges vs three. Plastic bathroom fittings. I keep thinking it won't age well (wear and tear).

Is it just because these places have lower thresholds for loans? Is it because people can buy "new" easier with a trailer?

I doubt it.  For all the bleating about it here, granite and stainless doesn't add much if any cost anymore.  You can get cheap granite and basically any appliance is available as stainless for $100 more or less.  These trimmings are no longer expensive.

The payments are similar, not because of the granite and stainless steel, but because the interest rates are twice as high. Manufactured homes are primarily owned by people who don't qualify for traditional mortgages.

The key to selling a manufactured home is to halve the size, double the price, and call it a "tiny house".

That's the truth. We attended a tiny home show. $85K for the one with all the trimmings. You got everything but square footage. Others were in the $45K range. Still around here a person could buy a small starter house from the 1940s and 1950s for that price. Our first house was a 1940s house. We loved it. A bit short on space but it was mostly the way we filled it with our stuff - too much stuff.

I could see going back to a house like that some day post children if we aren't the destination for everyone's holidays.

I'm just going to keep telling myself that our protagonist's smug look at :19 is because he's thinking, "Well you may have great toys, but I'm FIREd and don't have to go to work tomorrow to pay off my overpriced manufactured home."

I'm glad I read this before watching because it totally fits. Not only that but a smugness saying "You really are lazy aren't you? "

Haha...  Mustachians are so old fashioned.  Granite was, like, 3 years ago!  Everyone needs quartz countertops now.  ...Geesh, get with the times.  ;)

i was honestly thinking:

- 1 small grill v. 1 huge grill + a smoker
- push mower and meh landscape v. nice riding mower and manicured landscape
- sweeping the deck v. using 2 fkn blowers to clear your deck
- economical patio furniture v. a ton of patio furniture and 2 umbrellas

it was all about owning stuff, consumption, and more is better...and it irked me.

Yeah, I got that, but when I discovered that it was an ad for cheap-ass schlock manufactured housing, it took on a whole new meaning.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
