The hottest new piece of decor... the Fiji water sleeve!
« on: November 14, 2016, 06:44:48 PM »
I went to an oncology conference geared mainly towards physicians.  It was held at a Hilton, and everything was set up more as though it were a wedding than a conference, though maybe as a nurse I just have low standards for conferences.  Tables had tablecloths, water goblets, and bowls of mints.

I also noted on every table, a bottle of Fiji water in one of these:

Yup.  A $30 metal sleeve, designed specifically to hold overpriced plastic bottles of water.

I'm sure it's an ethically sourced, conflict metal free sleeeve crafted with a cradle to grave lifecycle focus on sustainability and recycling.

For your bottled water.

To keep it cold. And, you know, keep your water "untouched by man."

They forgot to hand you the instruction manual
1- remove bottled water
2- add ice in the metal sleeve
3- pour bourbon
4- badass!

Eh. I don't like ice directly in my whiskey. Put the tumbler in a chilled water bath though...

For those times when Fiji water itself just isn't enough to convey how much of a snobby consumer douchebag you are.

I found them on the website.

The 500ml sleeve: $20.
Smooth, sleek design that complements any décor. Perfect for business meetings, executive conference rooms as well as formal entertaining.

The 1L sleeve: $30.
Simple styling adds understated luxury to your FIJI Water bottles. A perfect accessory for formal parties, weddings and banquet rooms.

Understated luxury.  That sounds impressive.

However, if metal isn't your thing, there are bamboo options.

For the 500ml, a mere $25 gets you this:
Dresses up your FIJI bottles instantly for parties, guest rooms or your dinner table. Add a touch of tropical paradise to your event!

And, of course, for an extra $10, the 1L bamboo sleeve at $35 offers so much more:
The perfect pairing for your FIJI Water bottle. Create an instant makeover for your dinner table with a hint of island theme!

But they're not done.  Who could possibly be seen in public without a $30 pair of Fuji Water Cufflinks?
Limited edition, beautifully crafted FIJI Water cufflinks in polished silver. The iconic shape of the FIJI Water bottle is the perfect accessory.

Where's my huge rolleyes icon? :/

You're right, Fiji has to come out with a metal ice bucket so we can store the metal sleeve in it

I shuddered at seeing this but what the hell do I know, this likely will sell like hotcakes to their target demographic.

On a side note, in my industry there isn't much in the way of swag bags for conference attendees, but from my siblings and other friends that are in more glamorous industries it's crazy what they get. A family member was a speaker at a tech conference and his swag bag included a brand new Ipod along with other gifts that were many hundreds of dollars. He was pleasantly suprised by it as he wasn't paid for speaking other than his travel expenses (he spoke for the exposure and the opportunity to meet some CEOs for consulting work).

I did not know this was a thing, but now that I'm aware of it I'll make a point to use the first one I see as a cup.

Don't drink out of it... I really don't think these things are cleaned very often.

What's the purpose?

I'm assuming just to dress up the water bottles so they look less like plastic water bottles.  I kept thinking though that glass water carafes would probably cost the same or less, and look classier than a plastic water bottle in an overpriced metal sleeve.  Then you also get the bonus of spending fractions of pennies to fill them rather than $1+ per bottle, and there's no waste and a much lower environmental impact.

People are so germophobic in today's society that it would never fly.
They want their own bottle, not to be shared with anybody and not to have the water in contact with air.
The very dangerous air! (That's why you always see plastic film on top of carafes).

I'm sure people believe water bottles and cans of soda are moved via aseptic teletransportation and not in rusty steel ship containers or trailers, and are stocked in hospitals instead of filthy grocery warehouses (if you've seen one, you know what I'm talking about)

Having booked a lot of conferences, it costs a lot more to have the water bottles than the carafes, but people are more likely to drink bottled water.  I've seen participants who have a carafe 2 inches in front of them go to the back of the room to get a bottle of water.  We provide both because the carafes save us a lot of money, but if there are not bottles people complain, and in my line of work, we need people to not complain so they will come back again.

Formal entertaining? FORMAL ENTERTAINING? Bottles don't belong on the fucking table. Nobody wants to see plastic. There's a reason that salad dressing is served either individually on the side or directly on top of the salad: nobody wants to see a big, greasy blob of plastic while they're trying to eat.
