I've heard of "keeping up with the Joneses", but this is more like "keeping up with the Addamses":

I've always felt that once we carve a pumpkin our halloween decorations are complete.  :P

I'm always torn; I love Halloween, including the decorations. But putting them up just attracts trick-or-treaters, and I'm really not fond of kids...

My BiL's family does a massive decorating spread every year (including some pneumatic "animatronics" that he inherited from a former neighbor), so I've been living vicariously through them the past couple of years.

We had a Halloween house down the block from us that moved out this year. While not my cup of tea personally to decorate this much (a couple pumpkins and a mum are our extent), I did enjoy their display on our evening walks. I bet they have this guy where ever they live now.

There's an absolutely incredible Halloween house in my neighborhood, and my kid loves it. Walks past it with eyes wide with wonder, and not a little bit of fear. Dozens of skeletons, about 10 giant inflatables. Lights, music, the works. I used to roll my eyes at things like this, but I think for some people, it's an annual family art project, and something that gets neighbors talking with each other and interacting. All things I'm in support of.

I personally put a pumpkin on the porch and call it done, but I'm not going to object to holiday whimsy.

My kids made prize ribbons and thank you notes for their favorite houses this year. We had a lot of fun (and got great exercise) walking through our small town looking at displays.

I love the community aspect of over the top holiday decorations.

I am that house in my neighborhood, but I make my own stuff mostly now. I usually do a haunted circus/sideshow theme (ticket booth, clowns, skeleton tightrope walker, clown mouth tunnel to front door, jack in the box, ghost pony carousel, freak show signs) or like this year, we're a haunted pumpkin patch with goofy skeletons and other creatures "helping" out in the set up.

I don't have a problem with anything that encourages my neighbors to have a nice time and talk to each other. We sit outside with our bucket of candy for the trick or treaters, chat with everyone as they come up, and enjoy the costumes and usually lovely weather. It also happens to be my anniversary, so there's that too. ;)

I have very fond memories of the houses in my childhood that went all out. It tickles me to think that there's a whole generation of kids that likely remember our house and still think about it as they're taking their kids around for the first few years, and might get into it themselves.

Was that news, or a commercial....

@Frankies Girl That sounds like so much fun!

We do a big pumpkin patch  (fake pumpkins) with some ghouls and fencing for Halloween then we sit outside and have a fire in the firepit in the driveway (yah we are that classy) and have kids take candy and/or books for trick or treating.  The trick or treating table is inside a washer drum DH cut and painted like a giant jack 'o lantern.  It was good for social distancing the last few years so we decided to keep the new tradition.

Our side yard is very full of yard art (most made by DH) so this is just some seasonal stuff in the front.   For us, it is very reasonable actually....

Maybe file the giant decorations under "More-Is-Better Fallacy"?

No, it is not possible to over-decorate for Halloween or Christmas. I'm too lazy to do much but we should all celebrate there there are some people out there who has  nothing better to do.

Tradition is fun and important to maintain.

My mother has put out a small manger scene/display with little two or three inch figurines each Christmas.  For the past twenty years I've been secretly putting a couple raisins behind the camels rear end as my own contribution to the holiday.  It has been touch and go a couple years, but mom hasn't caught me yet.

Followup report: my BiL's daughter came home sick Halloween day, so our plans were cancelled. I made an excuse to work late, but still ended up handing out candy to a couple of little 'uns. Not nearly as bad as I'd imagined; of course, we mostly got little-littles w/ their parents, no obnoxious teens/tweens etc.

I could see maybe decorating more next year, but then I'm not sure how much our HOA allows? We've got a tiny postage-stamp yard anyway (townhouse), so no room for the giant wolfie... (*sniff*)

Only bad thing was that we were left with lots of candy (which we couldn't conveniently "forget" at BiL's place); we ultimately had to hide it from ourselves. And I found out that too much candy makes me grumpy the next day --is there such a thing as a candy hangover?

Not gonna lie, I'd buy that werewolf if I were the type to spend $$ on stuff. I love Halloween and really appreciate the houses that go all out! Its better than spending money on inflatables, which are neither cool or cheap.

My mom has a Fontanini creche and every time I see it, I flip the baby Jesus over so his backside is showing. I'm 45 years old and the novelty still hasn't worn off.
