Spa day trend for little kids
« on: January 03, 2015, 07:28:28 AM »
Horrifying article in the NYT: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/03/us/after-a-spa-day-looking-years-younger-ok-theyre-only-7.html?&target=comments&hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&modref=HPCommentsRefer&module=photo-spot-region&region=top-news&WT.nav=top-news&_r=0#commentsContainer

"I feel like the best princess in the world,” said Paige, who celebrated her seventh birthday at Sweet and Sassy, a national chain of spas that boasts that its cosmetologists are specially trained to work with children. After the beauty treatments, Paige and her guests walked down a red carpet and disappeared into a hot pink limousine, which took the squealing children on a spin around the parking lot. One 6-year-old guest documented the revelry in a series of selfies."

The comments are gratifying, at least.  They are equally appalled.

The spa association’s president, Lynne McNees, said it was good for girls to learn that beauty treatments can reduce stress and promote health. “It’s very similar to taking little kids to the dentist,” Ms. McNees said. “Let’s get them early, and get those really good habits.”

*twitches uncontrollably*

This comment makes my brain hurt a bit.  I'm all for a stress-free and healthy life, but I'm highly doubt a luxury spa is a required habit.  I think having to pay for this party might have just given her mother enough stress to need a "much deserved, stress-reducing trip to the spa."  SMH....

I had to double-check that this wasn't being syndicated from The Onion.

Kudos to the operators for finding a business opportunity, I suppose.

Really? Getting your feed rubbed is akin to making sure your teeth don't fall out? I don't know how this woman can run a business like this while keeping a straight face.

“I don’t want them to feel that my saying ‘no’ means that I don’t love them,” she said.

"Wait, did I say that out loud?" she added. "This is off the record, right?"

I have NO memory of ever WANTING to feel relaxed as a child.  I wanted to DO THINGS.

I always felt relaxed - just before I went to sleep at night.

All the effort we went into for the second round of feminism (let's be more than just sex objects, OK?), and now they are turning the little ones into super consumers.

I think it is head-bang-on-desk time.  To early for booze.

Seeing children in spas getting treatments gives me an itchy face-punching fist like almost nothing else.

My fear is that this becomes the norm. Yes, relaxation is a very important thing and stress is terrible for all of our health, but I think the concept of a little kid going to a spa is the worst response to it. I do on occasion see a masseuse (thank you Groupon), but that is a more extreme measure to handle stress. Instead, I meditate and exercise, and hang out with people that make me laugh, as these are healthier ways of dealing with stress.

Seriously?  They're seven, they shouldn't even know what the inside of a spa looks like!

Here's my thrifty idea for a "glamor" birthday party:  Buy a few sparkley nail polishes at the dollar store, cheap pink lipsticks, some funky hair bands and glitter spray, and get another parent or two to help do hairstyles.  Bring a big mirror into the living room for modeling, get each kid a feather boa and maybe some plastic jewelry.  Bam, party.  I guarantee you that kids will have just as much fun as the big expensive parties at the spa.

I remember intensely wanting to relax as a child and the best way to do that was to hike out to my favorite tree in the wilderness near my house and sit down and read.

Me, too. I could never understand why my parents always wanted to just sit in the backyard with a drink and talk when there were holes to dig, trees to climb, worms to dig, bikes to ride, bugs to catch . . .

And this is one of the reasons why I am thankful that I have boys.  As a kid, I was never into the typical "girly" things.  This type of party holds no appeal to me whatsoever.

As an adult, I'm still unclear on what's relaxing about the spa experience.

I doubt these kids experience relaxation; it's just the usual parroting of adults that little kids do. On our buses sometimes you have to yell for the driver to open the back door if the passenger lever is off, but I know one little kid who will yell "Back door!" in perfect mimicry of adults every time their family leaves through the back door, even though it's not usually necessary. Or I've heard a little kid say, "This traffic is crazy!" in a really exasperated way, obviously just because they've heard mom and dad say it.

I was thinking that. Childhood has been about imitating adulthood since time immemorial. Kids have played with toy spears, toy swords, toy people, and toy vacuum cleaners. So if they see their parents going to get spa treatments...why not toy spas? Just took someone ready to cash in on the opportunity...

Lots of girls were not into the "girly" things either, they are just a label. We were called "tomboys" - definitely a labeling issue, we weren't trying to be boys, we just had things to do.  But we weren't following society's norms for girls, so . . .  My feminist side thinks it is propaganda, back to the 50's.

And this is one of the reasons why I am thankful that I have boys.  As a kid, I was never into the typical "girly" things.  This type of party holds no appeal to me whatsoever.

I actually was a super anxious kid (who turned into a pretty anxious adult, go figure) who seriously needed to relax and had a lot of trouble sleeping (this is no longer a problem, LOL)... but my parents didn't take me to a spa, they bought me relaxation/meditation tapes by this guy:
http://www.bobgriswold.com/

in retrospect this is incredibly nerdy and strange, but hey, it worked. plus you just have to buy the tape once instead of going to the spa multiple times :)
