Sitting in the antenatal waiting room at the hospital, I overhear two men chatting about their very pregnant wives:
Man 1: Looks like she's due any day, huh?
Man 2: Yeah, due next week. Hoping it doesn't come early cause they won't let you home without a car seat and I don't get paid til Friday, so if she's in this week she'll be waiting here til the weekend to come home!

Right.. they had almost 9 months to prepare for the baby to come and they haven't bought or second-hand received a baby car seat.

I hear they sometimes ask for a little thing called money before you go home as well

Not in England, though your president seems to regard this as a bug rather than a feature.

Doh, missed the location.  But this makes me wonder why, if car seats are such an important aspect of public health, they do not provide “free”options upon discharge.  Kinda like the Obamacare breast pumps, but for car seats

Because the NHS gets to do cost-benefit analysis and say no. I imagine 99% of people would reject the standard hospital car seat in favour of something cuter or with more features, so it's jut not worth them getting into it. Plus srsly, people have nine months to prepare for their baby. It is not supposed to be a massive surprise! But I found out a little while ago that my local council gives vouchers towards the cost of cloth nappies, so clearly there is some interesting cost-benefit analysis there.

It shouldn't be a massive surprise, but see exhibit A above.  Unfortunately, that kind of person is why you need public health agencies to begin with.

Neighbour told me I should buy a 4WD because then if I'm out and about and need to change my baby's nappy, I can do it in the boot. I have no words for this madness.

I'm pregnant. Next person who asks me "Oh, so are you getting a car now?" gets a smack.

We were constantly told we needed a bigger car. It annoyed me. Then we tried to fit a carseat in our tiny car and... Yup. We had to buy a bigger car. SO UNIMPRESSED. At least nobody was silly enough to say "I told you so" to me.

Tell me about it.  One of the fist things we bought to get ready for baby is a car to fit a car seat. My 18 year old sporty coupe was not going to cut it. ::sigh::
Still sticking to a compact, though, despite parents saying I'm going to need an SUV. I hope I'm not proven wrong later.

Some parents need the whole kit and kaboodle to travel down the road 10 minutes with baby. Some mums just shove a spare nappy in their bra and the baby under one arm and go. Bit hard to tell which you are until baby is actually born. Hormones make you behave in some very unusual ways!

Met a new neighbor of mine today:

- He showed me his new $12,000 bicycle.
- He said he has 2 other bicycles and he keeps them all in his small 800 sqft apartment. No bike racks or anything, just on the floor. (Waste of space!)
- Mentioned that he spends $3,000 or more on his suits, and that he keeps a "cheap" $1,000 suit as backup

He even started a guessing game, asking how much I thought each component of his bike cost. Like seriously, dude? I do not even understand why you'd spend so much on a bicycle...

My grandfather told me that way back when folks up north would build a small wood/coal fire under their Model T to warm the engine and make it easier to start.

I did this with my Model S once, do not reccomend
Elon Musk just did this with his Roadster, I heard it started well

If I do end up being a kitten-and-poodle (:P) mum then my husband will be the perfect antidote. I'm sure he would view the spare nappy as being a borderline burden.

Hahahah. I think it depends largely on your baby. Some babies are very low key and others will need multiple nappies, changes of clothing (poo explosions!), multiple bottles, multiple distracting toys etc. That's for a 10 minute trip to the store. Some babies specialise in the mystery poop that can happen any time, day or night, while others poop at the same times daily and can be planned around. Some babies spit up every 2 minutes, and some are quite tidy. And then you may find you're a high energy mum or you're exhausted, perhaps too exhausted for that 20 minute commute walking or biking. You may find that a car makes life a lot easier. Or maybe not. Just see how it goes and don't stress however it turns out! But do whatever makes your life easier. Mustachianism is not a good enough reason to be tired and stressed out with a new bub.

Hey that's mean! It's somewhat out of sight, but I guess spending $100k more for a 2 bed place instead of a 1 bed place so I can store a $450 bicycle isn't exactly the smartest financial decision...

Those aren't the only two options. :D

We could have bought the rack I found, instead of using the trusty Yellow Pages. :P

Every Christmas I have a fantasy idea to get several 2nd place awards printed for our subdivisions Christmas decorations committee. (there is no such thing)
Then secretly give the awards to everyone with decorations. I'm sure this will spur a few to up their game next year.
The next year I'll add a note with the 2nd place award, The (subdivsion) Decorations Committe really had a tough time this year, picking from all the great decorations, if you didn't win, maybe next year is your year! Congatulations on your 2nd place award.
But I haven't done it, yet!

You're sick and twisted...in a beautiful way!

Next time you meet he will tell you his salary, savings, how much student debt he is in, total account of his credit cards and if he wipe back-front or front-back.

Congrats on your new neighbro ;)

Even though the price for his bicycle is insane, even compared to a lot of expensive bikes I know of, his bragging about it is the worst. I understand that someone wants to have nice gear, although not for that price. But bragging about the price of the bike, each part and the suits is completely weird.

This reminded me of this glorious ad... I love how they look so surprised.

Just not trying hard enough. My kids were both at school before we got something bigger than my Mitsubishi Cordia. So yes, at one point we had a baby capsule AND a car seat in the back of that.

I loved that little car.

Thanks random judgemental person from the internet.
Based on our measurements, we suspected it didn't have enough length in the back seat. Still, the first thing we bought was a car seat to test into our existing cars. It fit DH's, not mine. Too bad you weren't there to show us what we were doing wrong.

I wouldn't say huge, but it's a decent size for 2 people around here. You definitely still have to cognizant of what you accumulate to prevent the place from filling up!

Based on my experience I‘d say it’s decent for four people if it has enough rooms.

You're not thinking m^2 are you?  I have a studio of 550 sqft, and that's about the smallest you can get.  800, is pretty common around here.

I'm in 550 as well. Smallest you can get around here is about 400.

Screw the car seat, just wait until they need to pay for _____ (insert any of the thousand things that newborn babes, babies, toddlers, kids, teenagers, ect need). If they are having difficulties paying for a car seat which is a known expense, I shudder to think at how they will handle an unexpected expense.

I just went to an open house for a house that's 2BR and 720 sf.
Typical studios are 400 sf.

My studio in DC was HUGE and it was 537 sf.

Probably the difference between LCOL and HCOL.  I looked at a bunch of apartments, and most don't even offer studios here.

In my apartment building's parking lot, there are two ford F-350s. One of them is pretty banged up, covered in mud, and has a load of stuff in the bed. The other is in perfect condition, always shined, and never has stuff in the bed. I wonder if the owner feels foolish seeing a truck that actually gets used for truck stuff next to his coddled monstrosity. Probably not, though...

I love it!

Oh man, Christmas decorating nonsense.  My neighbors were pretty bad about that this year.

My favorite/least favorite was one that had an odd mix of inflatable nonsense and lit up nonsense simultaneously declaring "JESUS IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON" and having Santa, reindeer, and snowmen bullshit.  Pick a side, sheesh.

One of my dogs started barking like crazy at an inflatable Santa the first time she saw it.  Good dog.

Can I please run with this idea and write a short script with it as it's basis?

PM me if you want to discuss it further.
;)
Feel free to run with it, I've contemplated this for 5 or 6 years and never get around to it.
I'm sure we have one home that would be very surprised they didn't win, I can't even imagine
their show the next year afer getting second place!
 Edit:
btw, I was raised in the North with plenty of snow at Christmas, now that I'm in Fl.
all the decorations just seem out of place, that's where the idea sprung from.

I took a walk around the neighborhood today and heard one of the houses running their A/C. It was a high of only 66 degrees here today!

Yep, that seems pretty common. I have a neighbor next door who seems to always have the A/C on during nice days like that. It's obnoxious to have the windows open on the one side of the house and have to hear the noisy A/C turn on. I'm a light sleeper and found out it's hard to sleep on nice days with the windows open for the same reason. I wake up with the noise change - whenever the A/C turns on, then again when it clicks off.

Are you sure this isn't a warmth pump? A warmth pump can be used as airco as well.

Definitely a heat pump.  According to my wife, 66 degrees is life threateningly low

How can anyone possibly sleep in a room that hot?

I'm gasping for air and unable to stay asleep if it's more than 58 degrees [14.5 C] at night. In the summer I can just open a window to cool off, but in the winter they're frozen shut. (I could force them open to escape if there was a fire, but they might need repairs after.)

It's A/C. All the houses in our neighborhood use gas for heat.

A neighbor posted of facebook looking for recommendations for someone renting barn or garage space. He has 400 square feet of storage unit and has run out, so wants to rent something larger, and the storage unit place is too expensive.

This is someone with a 3,000+ square foot house and a 3 car garage.

Yes, yes we do.  That's why we come with our own warming apparatus.

It's A/C. All the houses in our neighborhood use gas for heat.

There is one reason that I accept for running A/C rather than opening windows in otherwise nice weather: allergies. If you're allergic to pollen, etc and you open the windows, you're pulling all that stuff inside. Depending on the severity of your allergies, I get it. It can be cheaper in the long run to run the A/C instead of paying for medical treatment and drugs to deal with the symptoms.

+1. I so wish I could leave my windows open during nice weather, but the constant sore throats and sneezing make it a no go. Unfortunately, the same goes for my asthma during the winter with the cold. I've found that if the heat pump is set lower than 65 at night, I'm going to wake up in the middle of the night coughing and have an asthma attack.

Sigh... lungs/sinuses, get it together.

Fomerly known as something

Yes it is pine pollen season in the SE right now.  And by pollen I mean my sister's car changes from Black to Yellow.
