Most Expensive Cable Bill
« on: June 18, 2014, 11:52:45 AM »
Wondering what others have heard as the most expensive cable bill, either at work, in public, from friends or family, or (gasp!) that they themselves pay.

Coworker of mine recently called to see if he could get a lower rate than $250 he was paying (!).  He was proud of himself for talking it down to $140.  Obviously he has every sports package known to man, along with every premium HBO/Starz/Cinemax/etc.  BTW, this is for a dish, so this DOES NOT include internet or home phone (off topic, who even uses a home phone?).  $140 for only the TV.  $40 of this is from equipment charges on 4 boxes (only 2 people in the house...).

So short story, highest price I've heard of someone paying for TV-only is $250 (technically now $140).

I think my parents are paying around $300 per month for cable/internet/phone from AT&T U-Verse. Whatever the most expensive plan is, they have it. They have all the channels, including HBO, Showtime, Starz, Cinemax, etc. They also have 6 TVs in the house with a cable box attached to each TV. So, yeah, add that all up.

Why do they have all this? Because my Dad loves TV and loves having all the channels. But he can afford it so who am I to judge?

The highest number I've ever heard is $250/month...but I don't know what it included (and I don't often ask someone what their cable bill costs).  Back when my (now) husband was in university he moved into this crazy crowded house with some friends in San Diego.  There were 6 of them living there with only 3 bedrooms and one bathroom.  My DH moved in for the cost of paying the cable bill and had his very own futon in the family room.  It was kind of ironic since he doesn't watch TV, but you can't really come by a cheaper rent in San Diego and he had a great time living in that house.

Paying for cable is just one of those things that I don't get in this day and age.  Maybe because I don't have kids???  Since moving out on my own 7 years ago, I've never had cable or a TV but have STILL always still consumed way too much media since you can stream it all for free on your laptop.

On the topic of home phones, we still have one, although it's not a POTS line.  It's an Ooma Telo--pay $100-150 up front, only pay $5/mo for regulatory fees after that.  We use it enough that it lets us use Airvoice's $10/mo plan for our cell phones.

My roommate and I have a $226/mo cable bill. We don't even get that much (basic cable + hbo- Internet- phone).

It has gone steadily up from $99 over the last 4 years. We don't have any other options in our building and cablevision knows it--they never offer to reduce the bill when we call.

That said I would be perfectly content not having cable and only having internet, but my roommate demands cable and since he's my best friend sometimes it's easier to just out up with it rather than go defcon 1 on him.

Moving out in a month and am looking forward to my $40/mo internet only plan!

My parents recently remarked to me on how happy they are with their new "bundle".  "Only" $145 a month for TV/Phone/Internet.  They *were* paying $145/mo for TV and $45 for phone (I was paying their Internet at the time, $20/mo)...

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
