Christmas sayings?!?
« on: November 30, 2012, 10:08:28 AM »
I was researching Christmas sayings for our home-made cards this year (first ever!) and came across this one. I think I puked in my mouth...just a little...

"Christmas is the season when you buy this year's gifts with next year's money. "

And then I realized how awesome it is that this is not true for my family this year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice, isn't it? Congratulations to you.

True for us this year, too. We have previously overdone Christmas and birthdays in epic proportions. Not this year. Super strict budget, frugal gifts and plenty of homemade stuff, too. The Hubs and I have a $10 limit for each other and that's only because the kids want us to be able to open a gift, too. So, I'll take the kids to get the Hubs and present and vice versa. Their budgets for each other are $15 (in years past it would have been like $40). Our budgets for each child have been slashed to 1/3 of their former overdone consumeristic glory.

If we didn't sell enough stuff to fund it, we won't be buying it. It makes the holidays a lot less stressful. Less to buy, less to wrap, less stress. I've even found some super cute handmade wrapping ideas on pinterest. We still have plenty of wrapping paper from prior years such that we won't have to buy wrapping paper for at least 5 years. By the time we run out, we'll have perfected the art of homemade wrapping, so we won't be paying for paper that gets torn up and thrown in the trash.

Wow.  Sad but true, for some people, I suppose.

Our bank offers a Christmas Club account, which is pretty much a special savings account that you can make deposits to, but can't withdraw any money from.  We have a little bit of money moved from our regular checking account to the Christmas Club account each month.  On November 1st, the bank transfers all the Christmas Club money to my checking account, and the savings process starts over.  So we're saving for Christmas automatically all year round.

noob515, that is an amazing thing for a bank to do! What a way to promote saving for future purchases! Do you mind sharing which bank this is? Or maybe if they have branches in WA state? No sure where you are...

I received a nice ad in the mailbox a few days ago. It was basically a check list of christmas presents, TV, Ipod, iphone, snowboard,... and the add was for a pre-approved $400 visa from one of those payday loan places to allow you to get the things everyone needs at christmas.   I'm assuming it's  prepaid $400 card and not a $400 credit limit. I'm also sure the interest rate on that card makes the mafia look good.

Marine Federal Credit Union.  Available only to USMC servicemen and their families.  Marine Federal has a much better interest rate compared to other banks (such as ING), and pays interest on checking accounts.  I don't think MFCU has any branches in WA, but maybe there's a comparable credit union you could join?

I have a totally normal credit union with the bog-standard community charter and they offer the christmas club savings account as well. I think even my old large regional bank offers them.

I went to a credit union's website a couple days ago and they had a banner add for Christmas loans with the tag line "even Santa needs help." Checking the details shows rates as low 4.74% and you can borrow up to $3000. At least it is better to use one of these loans instead of letting it sit on a credit card, depending of the rate you get.

Makes me think of a few lines from Tom Lehrer's "Christmas Song"

Hark the Herald Tribune sings,
Advertising wondrous things.

God rest ye merry, merchants,
May you make the Yuletide pay.

Angels we have heard on high
Tell us to go out and buy!
