Chelsea Clinton President After Hilary?
« on: June 15, 2015, 10:01:55 AM »
The Clintons seem to be long term thinkers.

So I'm assuming Hilary for 8 years.

Chelsea will be about 45 by then.  Can you see her sliding right in?

I can't, she hasn't been in the public eye for some time and I believe that by then the entire country will be facing an even greater Clinton fatigue. Plus, Chelsea hasn't been in public office, I can't see her jumping into the presidency without any experience. Now if she were to run for something between then and now, possibly. She would certainly have name recognition and her family's help in setting up a warchest and advisers.

The Adams and Harrison dynasties only resulted in 2 presidents. Maybe the Bush and Clinton families will be limited to 2 as well.

Maybe on the Jello wrestling circuit.  For political office?  Can't imagine it.

Yeah, might want to check out the current Congressional membership and see how many of them are first-generation elected officials.

Back on topic--no more Bush or Clintons, please.  We can do without political dynasties.  The serious contenders running 8 years from now, my guess is most of them are folks we haven't heard of yet.

I still don't understand how Clinton screwed up 2008.  Between her and Jeb Bush, I am all for political dynasties.    I just read Ted Kennedy's book and am hoping that Joe Kennedy III will make it past US Rep and possibly up to Senate or Presidency just to keep the legacy going.

Joe Biden and Dick Cheney not putting up a run after 8 years in the Vice Presidency is surprising as well.

It will depend on whether or not Dick Cheney's robot heart is up for it.

Dude's had like 5 heart attacks, a few heart surgeries, and the one he's got in there now isn't the one he was born with. After all that fuss people made about McCain not being able to lift his arms, I can't imagine Dick Cheney's health is a vote-winner.

Well we are due for another Clinton, seeing as there have been 2 Bushes. Hang on, wait...

Can't America find a candidate who isn't related by blood or marriage to a former President?

We can.  The question is do we really want to?  Obama and Bush are 11th cousins though so don't think he broke the trend.

Can we go with Barbara instead?

I went to school with them.  Jenna should not be allowed to run a country.

I can't imagine Dick Cheney is a vote-winner. Maybe in the primaries, but he'd get absolutely crushed in the general.

Are other countries getting dynastic situations?  Here we have Justin Trudeau.  I think the attack ads are silly when they refer to lack of experience, this guy had more political experience by 12 than most have by 30.  I mean, look at his father.

Totally as an aside, I saw one opinion piece that referred to the Conservatives as "mean", Liberals as "goofy" (If I remember correctly) which leaves Mulcair sitting nicely.  I would personally have put the Conservatives as "too wedded to ideology (vis-a-vis their present stand on delivery modes of medical marijuana).  Also so focused on "family values" when there are lots and lots of singles out there.  Not doing much for younger singles or older (divorced/widowed).  Their policies do seem to reflect their demographics.  Governments are supposed to do what is good for the country as a whole and citizens as a whole, not just favoured groups.

And to get REALLY OT, I hoped when the Reform and PC joined that we would see the best of each come from the new party -instead I think we are seeing the worst of both.  It will be interesting to see how much ABC voting happens in October.

Sorry to hijack, back to your regularly scheduled programming.

Why are we reverting to a hereditary presidency???

The 2012 election  cost about $1.25Bn/candidate, 2016 is looking like costing nearer $2Bn each
The Queen costs  £7.9 million/year (say $12.5M) even the whole family costs under £40M

You might wish to consider a more mustachian approach to the presidency ;-)

What about the Parliament? Although, I think the UK campaigning periods are much shorter (a handful of weeks). One of our problems is that people run for president for 2-3 years now.

If you like the excitement and spectacle of the campaign you could have an hereditary president and an hereditary challenger who always loses.

I suspect both parties will want to put up someone who is neither a Bush nor a Clinton.

Too much baggage.

Does anyone else look at the current field of presidential hopefuls and think to themselves: "we're a country of over 318 million people.  Are these 21 people really the best we've got?!"

I used to. Then slowly I realized that the type of people who want to be president are, basically by definition, likely to be terrible, power-hungry, manipulative bastards willing to ingratiate themselves to even more terrible, power-hungry, manipulative bastards.

It's a self selecting pool of people. I mean, honestly, would you want that gig?

Yes. But I wouldn't want to do what is required to get it. So your point remains valid.

I'd vote for you! But there's really no way you can still claim FIRE if you become the President. Yeah, that's right - I'm Early Retirement Policing yo ass on this.
