Jalopnik is a car enthusiats' blog and this article gives recommendations to a reader's letter about what "Adult" car he should buy as a recent college grad with his first job to replace his 2007 Dodge Nitro; budget = $25k.  The staff's recommendations do include some used options around $10k, but I smiled to see that the most starred comments held the real advice:

Reply
->"How about keep the Nitro and start saving money."

          Reply
->"This is the true, adult answer."

I like Jalopnik, there are some humorous writers there, however I did find it interesting as you pointed out, that the majority of comments suggested the reasonable answers.

"You don’t need an SUV to handle snow. Somewhat echoing Ballaban, just get literally ANY car and proper snow tires for the winter."

"Yeah. My “adult” car is a Honda Fit. It isn’t fun or cool, but it is reliable, functional, and most importantly, paid off."

"Just keep the Nitro and drive the wheels off of it and pay down your student loans."

and finally,

"He doesn’t want to act like an adult. He wants to feel like an adult. There is a subtle, but clear difference."

YES. My biggest pre-mustachian regrets were all revolved around attempting to feel like an adult. Actually acting like an adult will lead me to FIRE.

The answer is always Miata. a Ford Crown Vic P71. Or a Toyota Corolla.

FTFY.
Bonus Points if you get the CrownVic and Corolla references.

I love that fatwallet ALWAYS suggests the Crown Vic.  :)  Not so much with the H&B reference, but it's still funny!
